Toby's obituary

It is with profound sadness that Carol Ellis, Philippa Ellis and family announce the devastating loss of Toby Francis Ellis, a beloved son, brother and friend to many.

Toby was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on June 3, 1974. His family moved Dunbar then to West Vancouver where he grew up and attended Caulfeild Elementary School (grade 2, 3 and 4) and St. Anthony’s elementary school (grade 5 and 6 ). He attended Vancouver College for grade 7 then after a family move to Australia for 2 years where he attended The Southport School, he returned to Vancouver College for grade 10 through 12 and graduated in 1992 with men who are still to this day, some of his dearest friends.

As a young man, Toby travelled the world and lived in France , England, California and Australia. Everywhere he went he  made new friends and kept in contact with them through out his life . He attended the  University of Victoria  for 2 years and loved the city of Victoria, a place he had hoped to call home again one day.

After completing his training at the Justice Institute in Victoria, BC, Toby was a paramedic with BC Emergency Health Services for many years, serving Greater Vancouver and Kelowna. He was immensely proud to be part of the paramedic community.

Most recently, Toby was living in Kelowna where he achieved his dream of owning a home. He was busy building a life there with Paula, and they had 2 pups named Benny and Audrey. He was an honoured  member of the Kelowna Casuals his cricket team  . Toby will be remembered for his smile and his laugh that transformed those who were lucky enough to be in his orbit. He had the remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

Toby’s story does not end here. It carries on with us in our retelling of stories of wonderful times with Toby, in our cheers during a Minnesota Vikings game, fishing on a lake, a camping adventure or on the pitch where Toby loved to be. Raise a glass, crank the Public Enemy and reach out to a friend one that lives on the other side of the world, one that you may not have talked to in a while and have a laugh. That’s what Toby would want.

We will celebrate Toby  on August 3 at Mahoney’s Tavern at the Vancouver Convention Centre @ 4pm all are welcome.
