I was deeply saddened to hear about Ting-Ning’s passing away.  A totally devastating shock.

Ting-Ning’s smiles touched everyone who had the honor to be his friends. we felt his intellectual wisdom thru his smiles when he talked. he was always positive towards others, his signature humors will forever be remembered and cherished by those who knew and loved him — his friends, his students, his colleagues, and his dear family.

He will be forever in our heart, a person who was widely admired, respected and missed. I know he is in heaven now, because he brought sunshine to those around him.

Professor Lee will be in our hearts forever

Professor’s Smile

In Memory of Professor Ting Ning Lee

On April 21, 2023, I was deeply shocked to hear untimely demise of Professor Lee on February 14, 2023. I felt extremely sad not only the GWU has lost a great scholar, but also I lost my teach. The bits and pieces of being with Professor are all in front of my mind, so clear, everything seems just to be yesterday.

When I studied at GWU, I took the lectures from Professor Lee, the Master of Control Theory at GWU, in the Academic Center classroom. I clearly remember that Prof. Lee explained ALOHAnet in a lower speaking voice. He always asked us to pay attention to the development of science and technology from time to time, and don't just focus on the knowledge in textbooks, especially for those students from other countries, it feels like he was just talking to me. Whenever I think of Professor’s smile in class, it always remind me his passionate teaching and his endless encouragement!

During my student life at GWU, whenever I encountered bottlenecks in academic research or when my research works were under pressure, I would go to his office to talk to him. Professor Lee always smiled and said to me: "Charles, he challenges and difficulties you have now are normal, and the training for doctoral students is to enable you to read and understand every book, solve every difficulty you may have, and even give you skills to face your future life!" Every time I talk to you, it seems to be recharged and I am able to face positively.

After graduation, Professor Lee also concerned my work and family very much. You visited us several times, and we also chatted on phone frequently. We were also invited to your house for important festivals. Our relationship is that of teachers and students, but we are like father and son. For You, I have infinite nostalgia and gratitude in my heart, thank you. .

Thank you, teacher, for your hard work. The work of shaping our souls is great. The burning of a red candle is short-lived, but it is eternal to illuminate our hearts.

Missing the teacher's preaching is not only to impart our scientific and cultural knowledge, but also to set a model for us to be a human being.

Thank you teacher for your encouragement in life. You have made us more confident in living in the United States and encouraged us to surpass ourselves. Your smile tells us: learning is not a burden, but a joy and responsibility. Your smile is like a key to the world we have never known, encouraging us to use our minds and hands to explore boldly, to seek and discover, and to make life full of surprises!

Forever cherishing teacher's kindness

Professor Lee will be in our hearts forever

He was and will be shining in my heart with his kind smile forever. I, as a professor in Korea, just hope to do the same teaching to my students.

RIP, Prof. Lee...my Teacher.

Dear Nancy,

It is so hard to accept the fact that Dr. T.N. Lee passed away and I just talked to him not that long ago after my back from a short trip to Taiwan.

I always remembered the good old days back in Madison where we study for our Ph. D degree in electrical engineering. we both went back to accept our degree celebrating ceremony where you met my parents.

Dr. Lee had a car and took us to a sea food restaurant regularly where we enjoyed all the shrimps we can eat, and the ice cream place run by the university food department.  He came to see me at the hybrid computer lab at the Engineering Research Building on the tenth floor with a beautiful view of the campus. I had a bicycle and can only stay on campus.

I went back to Madison to see Prof. Rideout when he was ill and bought one of his oil paintings of the Campus and later a trip for his burial services.  Professor Rideout came to Madison teaching in 1945 when I was born in mainland China.  Professor Rideout is very kind to me and offered me a job back to the department to wash out my mushroom smell order.  I regret now that I did not take the offer.

We met at DC and had to hide my dog, Lucy under the table for a Chinese restaurant meal that was the last time some years ago.

I had a master's degree under Bernstein and Ph. D under Rideout and a MBA at business school during wonderful six years at Madison.  But self-employee unlike Dr. Lee teaches at a university in DC until retired.

I also took him to sailing with me on the lake several times afterward had a famous Madison pizza with beer.

I was planning on taking a train to DC and having a dinner with T N and you but it will always be a regret now.

Take a good care of yourself.
