Thra's obituary
Update: Thra passed peacefully away at 5:48 today, January 12th, 2022. The doctors and nurses took special care to make sure he wasn't in any pain. Many of his friends and family were able to visit him at the hospital to give him their love and say their goodbyes. Our mom was one of the last people to visit him this morning. His partner, Amanda, and his niece, Calynn, was with him at the time of death. Amanda stayed by his side the whole time, playing songs and old Lakers games for him. We are so thankful that he is finally able to rest in peace. We thank everyone at Long Beach Memorial for taking such good care of him. As we hug our loved ones tonight, we will think of our loving, devoted brother and all the joy he brought into the world. We love you all!
We are still trying to raise funds for his funeral. You can now donate on this page in addition to Venmo. Just click on "Give" to get to the fundraising page. We have collected about $6200 so far toward our goal of $7000. Thank you to everyone who has donated. We appreciate you all so much.

Dear family and friends,
It is with heavy hearts that we must inform you that our beloved little brother, Thra (Sovatra) Soy, will be leaving us for his next life. On December 28th, 2021, he went into cardiac arrest while he was at home with his life partner, Amanda, and his dog, King Kobe. Due to lack of oxygen and other existing health conditions, he was placed on life support and is unresponsive.
He is currently receiving the best care possible at Long Beach Memorial Hospital. However, after extensive testing, it has been confirmed that he will never return to us as the loving little brother he always was. Although Thra appreciated healthcare workers, he hated hospitals. One of his biggest fears was being stuck in a hospital, restricted to a bed, and hooked up to machines, fully dependent for even the most basic bodily functions. Since he is unable to speak for himself, the responsibility has fallen upon his family and partner to make the toughest choice no one should ever have to make.
Our family has struggled with this reality. We love him so much and held on to hope as long as we could. We had many discussions about Thra, his values, and what he would have wanted. Given few alternatives, we have chosen to allow his body to take its natural course and let him rest in peace. We believe in our deepest hearts that this honors him best. He will be removed from life support on January 9th, 2022.
We thank all his friends and extended family for their support and condolences. He touched so many lives in his 36 years on Earth. He loved many things in life: his family (especially the love of his life, Amanda, and their beloved dog, Kobe), his friends, the Lakers, biking, fishing, the holidays, concerts, road trips to Vegas, and so much more. He was always the most excited to plan for family get togethers. Even though he didn’t have kids of his own, he adored his nephews and nieces. In many ways, he ensured that our family stayed together for all important events and holidays.
At this time, we would like to ask for help in collecting stories, photos, and funds for his funeral service. To share photos or memories, please email thrasoy@yahoo.com. Memories will be included in a slideshow at his service. Donations may be sent via Venmo to Amanda McDowell at @amanda-mcdowell-7. All donations will go toward funeral costs, which includes a traditional Khmer Buddhist ceremony to see him safely into his next life. More information about the service will be posted once arrangements are finalized.
Please share this message with anyone who knew and loved Thra. Thank you all for your love and support.
Sincerely,
The Soy Family
