Thomas's obituary

Thomas Darrel Ray, 66, died at home 6/11/24 in Humble, Texas. Born in Dallas and raised in Irving and Dallas. He reflected fondly on being surrounded by family and friends who were dear to him, the youngest of three. Survived by his brother Lawrence Ray and sister Donna Kay. He looked up to his brother, a Vietnam Veteran, and valued his desire to be a role model, fostering a strong pride in family. He doted that his sister, was a pure and loving soul, contributing to his gentle and warm spirit.

Reconnecting now with his mother, Bettie Ray, whom he took after with his calm demeanor. He honed his taste for a homecooked meal under her guidance, igniting his drive to carry on recipes and demonstrating his love to others through his culinary creations. His father, Leonard Ray, who served in WWII and the Korean Conflict, and also departed too soon.

Thrilled to attend the University of Texas at Austin, where he met beloved wife Donna and received a B.S. Elementary Education/ Endorsements. Their shared passion for working with children was the jumpstart to his career as an educator and trainer, specializing in Special Education and Crisis Prevention Intervention. A highlight of his career was coaching in the Special Olympics. He was a gifted teacher and was an endless optimist, believing that every person has potential and is of value to this world. Although, he bled orange, he later obtained his M.Ed. Educational Psychology at Texas A&M University College Station.

His devotion to Donna, with their marriage of 46 years, was a testament to their love and his legacy, spurring future hope through their two daughters, Makena Chesney and Tory Krieger along with granddaughters Peyton and Ainsley Chesney, and Kameron and Isla Krieger. A proud, playful, husband, father, and Popo who thought the world of each he held dear, knowing they will continue to leave an indelible mark on this world, just as he has. He loved and respected the sons acquired through marriage, Greg Chesney and Cameron Krieger. He cherished memories with his cousin Greg Schaatt, reminiscing on adventures and looked forward to each hangout. He thought the world of his nephew Brandon Dismore, sharing a love for the outdoors and the peace it afforded.

He was humble, intelligent, and a wordsmith, always ready with a synonym. He was the original ray of sunshine and relished a good tan. He had an unparalleled green thumb. We lost a compassionate, empathic, encouraging, non-judgemental, natural counselor, confidant, who was steadfast with a great sense of humor. We will remember him when we hear classic rock, and as we carry on family traditions of blueberry picking, pie-male day and drip sandcastles.

Tommy, Tom, Dad, Popo keep watch over us until we meet again. Hook 'em and cheers with frosty milk.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Special Olympics in his honor.
