I have only just read this notice of passing.

I met Syd. when he first came to Canada and worked at Dominion Engineering in Montreal, He sat right behind me and we worked on the design of ore grinding machinery...heavy engineering.  I replaced another friend of his...Dave Simpson who was moving on to Toronto to work at Hatch Associates.  We became good friends for a short while. Short because  he was posted to Toronto by the company where I visited him and his wife Rosemary a couple of times. They had their first child then. Like most engineering firms Dominion has long gone now. Syd and his family moved on to Seattle where he worked at Boeing I believe.

We went camping up at Sauble beach and around in his old Fiat saloon that he brought with him from Austria. One always thought that he would be a friend for life but alas the distance apart was too great and we lost touch. Gosh...58 years now... time flies. The manager that we worked for...Bob Smallwood (Mr Chips) died in 2011 I believe at the age of 100. The big office building that we worked in at Dominion has become a condominium now and the works have been demolished.

To the remaining Family members; my sincere condolences, he was a wonderful person who will be remembered by me till I die.

I fondly remember how Ryan and I were struggling once to remove a center hub off a British MG’s wheels that I was starting to restore.  Ryan and I each gave it a try, struggling miserably and couldn’t get it off.

Syd calmly approached and asked what we were doing.   In an ever classy Syd way, he proceeded to show and tell us, if we ideally knew what we were doing, and maybe even read the engraving on the hub, we’d see it had a reverse thread (we were attempting to loosen it the wrong way).   Syd proceeded to show us the right way to remove the hub off a British car.  Ever patient and wise

Just remembered how dad would inspect Olivia’s drawers and tell her how her (super messy) drawers didn’t pass muster and then spend the time to rearrange and tidy them with her.  He loved his organization!

I used to live next door to this family in the late 50s early 60s. I used to go with his dad (wilf) at 5am on a Sunday morning to watch him race. I was only 8 at the time. Good memories

Sarah, I remember Dad finding the perfect tree (or did he make something) up at the cottage for us to do chin-ups so we wouldn't loose any strength for gymnastics.   It was a little high off the ground for me but it worked!  I'm not sure if it was that year that he made us a home gym in the garage with a balance beam, floor mat and uneven bars hanging from the rafters.  He was amazing that way.

May the memories of Syd biking, whistling, taking joy in his pooches, and cherishing his beloved  family always bring you a smile when you need it most. ❤️

Grace and Becca,

I was so sorry to recently learn of your Dad’s passing. My heart aches for you and your family. Although I did not your Dad, I know two of his daughters; two beautiful, intelligent, and kind women. Your father’s legacy incarnate. Love and peace to you all.

Geniphr

I am just seeing this. I am so very sorry Sarah! Love you.
