Thomas's obituary

Thomas Mathew, aged 88, passed away on September 7, 2024. Born in Thiruvalla, Kerala, India to V.S. Thomas and Annamma Thomas, he was the eldest of three children.

After completing his schooling, Thomas went on to enter the workforce, notably as a contractor with the Indian military. During this period, Thomas was honored with an award from the Ministry of Defense for his work on the navigation mechanisms for Indian naval carriers. His work brought him to a range of locations throughout the region, fostering a love for travel and adventure he maintained throughout his life. It was during his time in Bombay that Thomas met and married his wife of over 51 years, Thresiamma. Their connection was immediate and unique; it was the foundation for a lifetime of helping family and friends.

Thomas and Thresiamma immigrated to New York in 1975, with their eldest daughter, Simi. In 1979, to their great joy, their second daughter, Lisa, was born. Thomas joined the NYC Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) as a Car Inspector, a role which he held until his retirement in 2000. Frequent card games with his MTA colleagues continued long into retirement, through which he joyfully stayed connected with a wide community of friends.

Thomas was fiercely loyal to family and friends and accepted, without hesitation, those from all walks of life. He never shied away from lending a helping hand, offering a non-judgmental listening ear, sharing advice with those who sought his guidance, and welcoming those in need of support into the warm, comforting home he and Thresiamma built together. Thomas was happiest bringing people together in celebration, in collaboration, and in peace. He will be remembered dearly by the many whom he touched with his support, humor, kindness, humility, and unassuming wisdom.

Thomas is survived by his daughters Simi and Lisa; son-in-law William; grandson Hayden; and many other dear family members who were touched by the grace of his spirit. He was preceded in death by his dear wife Thresiamma, and sisters Rachel and Annamma. Thomas will be deeply missed.
