Once upon a time, in the Fall of, 1966 or 1967 Tom invited me to join him and his family for Thanksgiving, at their home in Batesville, Indiana. Tom and I were classmates at Chaminade College Prep School, in St. Louis. Somehow, Tom learned that my experience with family was really broken. On the Trailways bus, from Indianapolis, we visited a little and Tom, who was always careful with what he chose to share, just told me, he wanted me to meet his family. And so I did. The minute I entered the room, I could feel there was a connection between Tom, his mother and father and all his sisters and brothers, I had never known. There was something unfamiliar to me, in the home in Batesville; just honesty and love. Though, I was so very much at peace and so thankful to Tom for inviting me, I had little to say on the way home, because I was remembering how wonderful it was. Tom turned to me, while riding the bus home and with that great Tom Laugle smile of sincerity he said, "Well, I see you got it." Tears came to my eyes and he patted my shoulder. Once again, Tom spoke saying, "I figured."

My family fell apart and left St. Louis. I left Chaminade and started down a long road where I was always drawn to families, hoping to see that love and honesty, once more.

Tom lives in the lines of my songs.

Here's a link to a Paul Simon song that spells out much of my life experience and maybe Tom's as well.  https://vimeo.com/channels/safronmusic/15240596

When I look at this link, after making the edit and insertion, it's somehow incomplete

Here's one from the same concert, for Tom.

Kirk and I talk about how much we miss you. We smile as we remember the many nights spent sitting on the dock chatting away the night. You have not been forgotten dear friend.
We love you
Gone but not forgotten. Sending love! I enjoyed our time together and being given the chance to do my work for you. That always creates a special bond and you were a good man on this Earth and now in Heaven.
Thank you to everyone who was able to contribute to Ellen's relocation costs. We were able to cover her travel expenses from Oregon to Indiana and make a donation to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. Your generosity was greatly appreciated.

Thank you for sharing pictures and memories of my dad. He will be missed.

So sorry for your loss. So many fond memories that we had over a 50 year friendship. Tom will definitely be missed. RIP my friend!
Tom was a caring, loyal and giving friend. He touched the lives of many students at CCC, and created new pathways for many more. I will always remember and appreciate his efforts with the bilingual Wildland Fire Science trainings he brought to CCC. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

Tom told great stories, and boy did he know how to inspire a love of the outdoors. He had such an impact on my daughter, Staci (Ellen’s granddaughter) especially. He could make a simple walk in the woods sound magical. I hope to continue to keep that magic alive. I wish we could have spent more time with him. I’m thankful for these memories. ❤️
Ellen - I was so sorry to read of Tom’s passing. It was obvious that Tom lit up your life by your posts and pictures. I think that I could even hear your laugh in some of those pictures. May you and Tom’s children (and grandchildren) always remember the great adventures that you shared. With prayers - Nan Hebenstreit
