Thomas's obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas I. Fulton, 89, who entered into rest on May 20, 2024. He was born in Buttonwillow, CA on June 28, 1934 to Daniel and Floy Fulton who later relocated to Salinas, CA. He graduated from Salinas High School in 1953 and went on to attend Hartnell College and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, studying Civil Engineering.

Tom proudly served in the US Army in Mannheim, Germany as both a Chaplain’s Assistant and Supply Clerk. After his service, he dedicated his career to working for the County of Monterey, Public Works Department, as a Junior Civil Engineer. A longtime resident of Salinas, he had a deep appreciation for his roots and loved sharing the rich history of the Salinas Valley with everyone he encountered.

Outside of his professional life, Tom was a dedicated lifelong learner. He would often be found with his nose in a book on topics ranging from railroads and lighthouses to mathematics and chemistry. His hobbies were diverse and included gardening (serving as President of the Salinas Bonsai Club), woodworking, stained-glass making, bread-making, and peanut-brittle making – a favorite holiday treat among family and friends. In addition, Tom enjoyed any project that required ingenuity and elbow grease, often creating handmade art pieces and gadgets for his family, which affectionately earned him the nickname “Tinker Tom.” He was one of the most interesting, brilliant, and humble individuals you could come across.

Above all, Tom's greatest passion was his family. His unwavering support and involvement as a great-grandfather, grandfather, father, and husband were a testament to his loving nature. Known for his sentimental spirit, he would often shed a tear over the simplicity of shared moments with his loved ones. His frequent calls and handwritten letters will truly be missed, where his exceptional penmanship, talent for storytelling, and comedic jokes would all come to life. Thomas is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Sharon; daughter Linda Bosio and son-in-law John; grandchildren Samantha (Daniel Boyle), Lauren, and Matthew Bosio; great-grandsons Hudson and his soon-to-arrive brother; younger sister Betty Holtzclaw; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Thomas was a one-of-a-kind treasure who touched many lives with his witty humor, thoughtfulness, and wisdom. His light continues to shine brightly, inspiring all who had the privilege of knowing him. A celebration of his life is planned for late summer.
