Background
Tom was a humanitarian whose compassion was seemingly limitless when it came to family, friends, and those in need. He was particularly invested in giving back to the Native American community, most recently through his own business venture that aimed to create job opportunities and training in IT for Indigenous people.
Mni Sota Makoce, or Minnesota as we know it, has been home to the Dakota people for thousands of years. Through broken treaties, genocide, and exile, the U.S. Government tried to extinguish this First Nation, and yet, they returned to their homeland and continue to persevere through a multitude of challenges.
This scholarship fund supports Native students in District 112, (where Tom's wife Janet has taught for over 18 years), on their path of continued education. In doing so, it also keeps alive Tom’s dream of investing in the futures of people in the Native American community.
Scholarship awards are given out to graduating seniors of Native descent from District 112 each year, who are enrolled at a post-secondary college/university or trade school. Janet personally hands out the check(s) at Chaska's high school's annual award ceremony in June.
The generosity of family and friends has already helped fundraise enough money for 2021 scholarships as well as a head start on 2022 scholarships. We're continuing to raise funds for 2022 graduates and beyond and your support is so appreciated. Thank you, so very much. Contribute
