Thomas's obituary
In Loving Memory of Thomas Walter Chapman
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Thomas "Tommy" Chapman, 84, of Queens, NY, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, who left us on June 25th, 2025.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, and the eldest of 5, he lived in Far Rockaway, Queens before putting down roots in South Ozone Park.
A man of many talents, Thomas was star running back for Far Rockaway High School while also lending his voice to New York's emerging doo wop scene as a member of The Larktones, recording two vinyl singles in 1958. A proud U.S. Army Reserve veteran of the Vietnam War and employee of the MTA New York City Transit system until his retirement in 2000, he brought dedication and integrity to his work and life.
Outside of his career, Thomas cultivated a taste for fashion - especially sharp suits - and a talent for restoring classic Mustangs. He was well known for his humor, generous spirit, and love of storytelling.
A devoted friend and family man with a thirst for adventure, he had a life-long passion for travel and skiing, which he pursued around the world with the Sno-Burners Ski Club. He remained active throughout his life, valuing health and fitness as a daily commitment.
One of the most meaningful chapters of Thomas’s life was the care he gave to his wife, Ceceile, during her long journey with Alzheimer’s. He remained lovingly by her side until her passing on October 22, 2018.
He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Ruby Mae Chapman; his brothers Gary, Steven and Frederick Chapman; and his beloved wife of 43 years, Ceceile Chapman (Henry).
He is survived by his two sons, Guy Chapman and his wife, Niemah, and Ian Chapman and his wife, Sara; his grandchildren, Aydin, Andell, Austin, Lucia, and Elena; his sister, Barbara Parker and her husband, Randy; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends. Later in life, Thomas also maintained a close companionship with Marcella Lancaster.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 26, 2025 at Frederick Funeral Home, 192-15 Northern Blvd, Flushing, NY. Visitation begins at 2pm, followed by the service at 3pm.
