I first met Tom probably in 1972 when I was a 16 year old lineboy at the local gliderport in Portland. Nine years later when I learned that backseaters were getting eye waivers for the front seat I asked Tom about it and in the course of the conversation he invited me to Oceana to visit where he had me fly the F-4 air combat sim. I'll never forget it. We reconnected a few years ago and now so sorry to learn of his passing.
The Lucas' family sends its deepest condolence's! Boot was a Department head when I was a Pukin Dog. He later went on to be CO of the that squadron when I was in VF-142, VF-143 was in readyroom 9, I was in readyroom 8, right next door. So we basically did 2 cruises + workups together. He was a great pilot and a great man, he will be missed!
Nance and I send our love and prayers to Karen and family as they mourn. We shared many good times in CVW-8 when Boot was CAG LSO- -great man and wonderful family! Boot now takes the lead in a squadron of angels.
My callsign is 'Boots' as my last name is also Hill. As a retired A-10 and F-16 pilot, along with missions in Vietnam in an OV-10 and a tour as a T-38 IP with 3,200 hours during my 22 year Air Force career (but only one 'trap' going aboard the Hancock in the back seat of an A-4 off the coast of Vietnam), I am grateful to 'Boot' for his work in bringing this matter to the forefront.
My condolences to Thomas “Boot”'s family. I first met Thomas “Boot” when [ describe how you know each other ] and we would often [ include common activities together ].
