Terry's obituary

Terry Heyward Platt passed away at his home in Hollywood, South Carolina on February 11, 2022 at the age of 66. Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Lucius and Pearl, sisters Paula and Patricia Anne, and twin brother Barry. He is survived by his wife, Patty, his brother Luke, his sons Christopher (wife Christine), Terry Jr., and Jonathan (wife Anina), as well as beloved grandchildren Reagan and Teo. Terry was born in Meggett, South Carolina on August 18, 1955. He studied veterinary science at Clemson University before becoming baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on June 29, 1974 in Charleston, SC. He left Clemson to serve at the world headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Wallkill, NY shortly thereafter, only leaving in the late 70’s to start a family.

Terry was outgoing and neighborly, always looking for ways to help others. He knew and was known by his neighbors, whom he helped out in practical ways, but with whom he also shared his hope for the future. He enjoyed volunteering his time and abilities as a carpenter to help build Kingdom Halls in the Charleston area, but also enjoyed speaking about his hope that God’s Kingdom would bring about permanent changes to the earth, often doing so in informal settings. He supported foreign language congregations in Spanish, Portuguese, and even had return visits in Chinese. Terry loved to make people laugh and was always making jokes – mostly “dad jokes” – many of which he would tell over and over again. He just wanted people to smile.

He always had music playing in the background at his house, and enjoyed singing as well. One of the things that brought him the most pleasure, though, was spending time in God's creation. He would often be out on the water in his boat, watching the sunset or following dolphins playing in the Ashley or Cooper Rivers, usually accompanied by others he had invited to join him. He will be truly missed by all those whose lives he touched.
