Terry's obituary

Terry Miles Hatch, 92, of Wheaton, Illinois, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 26, 2021.

Terry was born April 16th, 1929, to Clarance and Elizabeth Hatch in Detroit, MI. He graduated from Royal Oak High School in 1947. After two years of college he attended Officer Candidate School and then entered the Naval Aviation Schools Command in Pensacola, Florida. Terry then completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Terry lived in Detroit, Palm Springs, Evanston, Pensacola, Seattle, San Francisco, Colorado Springs, Chicago, Lake Bluff, Libertyville, Grand Haven, MI, and Wheaton, IL.

Terry met his wife, Jean, in Chicago. They were married in 1965, and had three daughters, Leslie, Allison, and Julia. They enjoyed raising their family together in Libertyville, IL and later traveling the world.

Terry shared his love of music with Jean. He enjoyed playing music (guitar, clarinet and saxophone), writing, photography, the joy of discovering and taking part in a variety of outdoor hobbies. He learned scuba diving, played tennis regularly, enjoyed swimming, skiing, canoeing, sailing, and cycling. An avid cyclist in his sixties, he rode across the United States twice, stopping to document buffalo and resident wildlife along the way. When he tried something new, archaeological excavation, for example, he often wrote a story about it for the local paper. He self-published a non-fiction book and delighted in leaving witty notes for his grandchildren.

Terry spent much of his career working in Chicago as an advertising executive in the magazine publishing industry. In his later years, he volunteered as a docent at Cantigny Park’s First Division Museum.

Terry is survived by his wife Jean, daughters Leslie (Jeff) Gail, Allison (Matthew) Mueller, Julia (Scott) Dudka, and his brothers, John (Judy) Hatch, and Peter (Lou) Hatch. He is survived by six grandchildren Kendall, Jay, Andrew, Ellis, Anna, and Andrew.
