Ted's obituary

Ted (Teddy) M. Eng

May 4th, 1948 - January 15th, 2022

Ted was born in Newark, NJ and died peacefully in his sleep in his home in Columbia, MD on an early Saturday morning in January. He had returned home under hospice care following an extended stay in the hospital for heart failure and related complications.

He was widely described by coworkers, friends and family as mellow, humorous, quick-witted and practical. A consummate foodie, Ted could often be found amidst his multitude of kitchen gadgetry, exploring obscure cuisines and sampling the offerings at all of the local grocery stores. Ever the handyman, Ted kept up with his home and yard needs himself, including the flooring, plumbing, constructing the back porch and maintaining a garden that the local wildlife devoured with abandon. This may make him appear utilitarian, but he had a creative, artistic flare which can be found in his wood carvings, line art drawings and his collection of delicate glassware (blue glass and antique lamps being the favorites).

Ted retired from working as a software programmer with IBM and prior to programming, Ted tried multiple disciplines including a tropical fish store, social work and retail. He spent many summers at church camp in leadership roles and continued developing community with his Rutgers University Greek life as a member of Tau Delta Phi. In his younger days he could be found on the tennis and volleyball courts, football fields, fishing at every opportunity and enjoying a glass of wine. He drove too fast and tested his parents patience while being the best big brother, sometimes all at once.

Anyone who had the joy of knowing Ted has a Ted-story related to food, drink, fish (tropical and the sport), music and/or mishap. Those who loved him will always remember him as gentle, kind, quiet, witty and …frugal. He was proud of his day-trading skills, his affable personality, athletic prowess; and he was most gratified by his friends and family.

To carry on his stories and cooking tips, Ted entrusts his only child- Dayna Falls, partner- Mary Jackson, mother- May Chan; siblings- Judith Eng, Sharon Eng (Bill Eng), Arnold Chan (Diana Chan), Donna Giese (Ferdinand Giese); grandchildren- Piper Falls and Gwen Falls; Aunts- Gladys Chin (Dennis Coffey) and Helen Eng (Tony); nieces and nephews- Christine Itzkowitz (Ross Itzkowitz), Eric Eng (Meg Allas), Jen Eng, Josh Eng, Noelle Giese, Brooke Giese; cousins- Richard Chin (Judy Chin), Corey Eng, Curtis Eng and Karen Eng; grandnieces and nephew- Amanda Itzkowitz, Matthew Itzkowitz and Ava Itzkowitz. Ted is predeceased by his father- Bucky Eng, stepfather- Kingsley Chan, brother- Nelson Chan, uncle- Tony Eng, cousin- Raymond Chin.

A virtual memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, March 5th at 2pm EST, via Zoom (Commonwealth Baptist Church, Alexandria, VA).
