Sylvia's obituary

Sylvia Finch Wirthlin passed away on November 28, 2023, at the age of 66. Sylvia was born Sylvia Ann Finch to Elton Finch and Shirley Howard in New Jersey, May 26, 1957. After losing both parents, she moved to Moorpark, California to become part of the loving family of Doug and Cheri Daniels. After graduating high school, she attended University of California, Santa Barbara where she earned a B.S. in Accounting while developing a lifelong love of history. It was in college that Sylvia met her former husband, Michael Robert Wirthlin. After they married, they relocated to the Bay Area where they had their first and second child, Morgan Emily Wirthlin (born 1986) and Erica Leigh Wirthlin (born 1990). She was a caring and resourceful mother, creating quilts, clothes, and cross-stitch art for her children through her expertise in sewing. Sylvia and her family relocated to Reno, Nevada, in 1994. It was in Reno that she switched careers from banking to managing purchases and accounts for large supply chains. On top of raising her children, Sylvia was a dedicated animal enthusiast. Throughout her life, she cared for many animals, especially her cats, and was an active member of the Humane Society. Sylvia also pursued her love of learning throughout her life, consuming numerous tomes on a wide range of subjects--from the Tudors and Indigenous history to women's studies and local archives. Both her love of animals and strong educational values were traits that her daughters inherited. She had a special fondness for British history, and like many of the strong English matriarchs she admired, Sylvia was a self-reliant woman who knew what she liked and did everything in her power to secure her children's futures. She is survived by her two daughters, who love her dearly and will miss her very much.
