Sybil's obituary

On Saturday, September 3, 2022 we lost our dear sister and friend Mrs. Sybil Joyce Thompson O.D.

Born October 1, 1924 in Mile Gully, Manchester. She knew at an early age, that she wanted to make an impact in the lives of those she came in contact with; having a father who was a teacher and community leader.

A woman of service, her contributions to the lives of many were facilitated through the selfless work and dedication given to the Government of Jamaica, as a civil servant and to the numerous organizations of which she was a part.

Working with the Government of Jamaica for over 30 years saw her embracing roles such as Permanent Secretary in the Ministries of Agriculture and Fisheries and Mining and Energy, and also serving as personal assistant to former Prime Minister of Jamaica Michael Manley.

She was the founder of Reach Women's  Club, a non-profit service organization focused on outreach for the less fortunate in our society.  After retirement, she took on leadership roles in other organizations such as GSB Co-operative Credit Union, HRMAJ (formerly JATAD),  The Small Business Association of Jamaica and The Jamaica Government Pensioners Association of Jamaica, where her impact was greatly seen and felt. Added to her list of priorities was her active involvement with the St. Andrew High School Alumni, having attended St. Andrew High School for Girls from 1934 - 1941. Also dear to her was the neighborhood of Acadia where she lived, and as such, was President of the Acadia Citizens Association.

Her service to the Lord was also seen in her committed involvement at The St. Andrew Parish Church where she was a member. She served on the Church Committee, The Morton Park Committee, was instrumental in the resurrection and reformation of the St. Clement's Mission in Kencot, and also gave assistance and input wherever it was requested.

She served the community by providing training, mentorship, homework assistance for the children of the community and employment grooming and placement. She was also instrumental in reinstating regular Sunday services at the Mission ensuring there was always music and a quorum for Eucharist each week. These efforts saw the  formation of the St. Clement's Mission Management Committee which was formed where she served as President, to ensure that the Mission was maintained and the doors never closed to anyone who needed assistance.

After 97 years, she is survived by her sister Joy, a loving son Donovan, five grandchildren, Tanya, Daejohn, Alexander, Ties and Shaunte, ten great grandchildren, Miley, Mia, Jayden, Jalaiah, Quame, Khaleef, Yusif, Isa, Madisyn and Eric Ethan, other relatives and many friends.

Her funeral will be held at the St. Andrew Parish Church, 4 Hagley Park Road, Kingston on Friday, September 30, 2022 at 11:00AM

Viewing will be made available at 10:00AM

May her soul rest in peace, and may she walk in light to eternity.
