Susan's obituary

Susan "Sue" (Carlsen) Stemen, of Summerfield, Florida, passed away in her sleep on January 28, 2024. She was 81 years of age.

The family is deeply saddened by her unexpected death.

Sue was born on November 10, 1942, the daughter of Norman Sigurd Carlsen and Betty Waneta Latshaw in New Eagle Boro, Pennsylvania. At age seven, she moved to Lyndhurst, Ohio where she spent her formative years. Sue attended Brush High School where she made lifelong friends; a small group called the Dana’s.

Later she attended Grove City College, resided in California, Pennsylvania, and lived in Michigan for most of her life until retiring to Florida. Sue was a business manager doing accounting when she joined the workforce after raising her children. There she met the love of her life, Gary Stemen (which was still visible when you saw the two of them gazing at one another). She poured her heart and soul into her family always trying to create a summer get together of the family as she enjoyed “up north” in her youth at her grand-parents cabin.

She spent much of her free time reading, painting watercolor, knitting for charities, playing games with friends, and fine dining. In her younger years extensive traveling, lake life and gardening were among her favorite pastimes. She was young at heart and a vibrant person who enjoyed life.

Everyone who knew Sue knew what a knowledgeable, fun, and generous person she was. Sue was full of enthusiasm and laughter, traits that were obvious to all after even just a single meeting with her.

Sue is survived by her husband, Gary L. Stemen of 34 years, her daughters Virginia Leigh Husic and Katherine Noel Sirvio, her son Gary Walter Kording, her stepdaughter Jennifer Leigh Perry and stepson Jeremy Daniel Stemen, who she felt as her own; an abundance of grandkids and great grandchildren, as well as a myriad of friends. We will miss her more than words can say.

Per her wishes, no funeral is planned. However, a Celebration of Life gathering is in the planning stages.

Contributions in memory of Sue can be made to American Lung Association.
