Susan's obituary

It is with great sorrow that we share that Susan Denise Becker (66), of Port Republic MD, died in her home on June 3, 2025. Never giving up on a challenge, Susan had fought for her health over the last year and passed peacefully in her sleep. She was born in Cumberland, MD on October 18, 1958 to Mildred and Francis Becker. Susan attended Archbishop Prendergast High School in Drexel Hill PA before continuing at Temple University. As a young woman she ran track at school and spent summers backpacking and canoeing which started a lifelong love of nature (with the very vocal exception of insects and mice). She held a variety of positions after moving to Maryland including carpet cleaning at the White House! She finally settled into the civil service ending a long and successful career as a GS 15 financial manager in NAVSEA’s office of the CIO.

One of the most significant dates in her life was just before she retired, September 16, 2013, the date of the Washington Navy Yard shooting where she bunkered in an office as the killer walked by, losing a member of her team. Susan honored those lives lost and the trauma shared every year.

Susan was active over her life in faith and ministry serving as president of the Waldorf Aglow and as an officer on the area team for several years after her retirement. She was an avid student of the Bible and enjoyed teaching. But more than formal religion, Susan lived her life out in generosity and compassion helping many she befriended. Though not married, she ‘adopted’ the children of her closest friends and was the funny and generous “aunt” forever part of their childhood memories.

Susan lived her life full of color, dry wit, deep friendships and shared meals. She made people laugh wherever she went causing some us to wonder if she had missed her calling as a stand up comedian. She had amazing recall for trivia, and facts and couldn’t believe we didn’t remember too. Her taste in music and movies was incredibly eclectic. She loved old Godzilla movies - what else needs to said? She was loyal to a fault and made her life count in not only her career but in her investment in others. Yet behind it all, she also courageously pressed through trauma.

Susan is preceded in death by her father Francis and brother David. She is survived by her mother Mildred and brother Francis, her sister-in-law Kathy and nephew Jeffrey. Susan’s love of her “furrballs” was legendary. As if they knew, both Peanut and Sweetpea recently died and certainly were there to greet her in heaven.

A memorial service will be held on June 26 at 11:00 at LifePoint Church in Waldorf, MD at 10395 Berry Road. Friends are invited to celebrate her life with those who knew her best. Luncheon will follow the service. For those where distance is too far, a link can be requested at Elaine@iLifePoint.com. Donations to Southern MD Animal Rescue at https://somdanimalrescue.com/… would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.
