Beginning of my career at OMC, I was to join them in Chennai and a week before that got a notification asking me to join them in Hyderabad. On the day of joining, I was told that this move had happened as a replacement to Surya who had just quit the job. Remember my first meeting with Surya, when my manager Raju and I bumped into him in the Paradise tea shop, after brief introductions we talked about his first entrepreneurial venture of setting up Machine Tools company, I wondered as to what made him choose tough road of entrepreneurship!
Few years down the line, I was selling CAD software into the Defense Labs and noticed a regular trend of tenders that were asking for software like Mathematica & few other scientific applications. It was Surya who educated the market about these software tools working for Optima, he was the sales manager there. I wondered this time as to what made him leave his entrepreneurial venture and be back into a regular job!
Time ticked on I was two years into my next job with EDS, here against my will I had to take a transfer to Pune and Surya came into replace my role in Hyderabad. I was to transition the opportunities that I was working onto Surya before I moved to Pune and I wasn’t particularly cooperative or may be even hostile to him. Few months into Pune, my manager quit and to my shock Surya became new manager. I was sure that I needed to look for an alternative job, people don’t take it kindly to un cooperative behavior especially as a boss. To my complete surprise, Surya reached out and spent substantial time to mentor and work alongside to make it a very successful sales year and in the process moved me back into Hyderabad. I wondered how magnanimous a person could be to mentor someone who had been intentionally hostile!
Working together we shaped many sales opportunities for our software in Defense sector and sold a lot. Surya gave me my first experience of going to a sales call in a Car and he was equally comfortable to ride pillion on my Scooter. I Still remember the drive to Ordinance Factory, on the way finding an empty building on the side of the road and having the food that we got from a road side eatery nearby, travel that we took to Vizag – he chose to go along with me on a train as against taking a flight that he was entitled as a Regional Manager. Two years I worked along with Surya was one of the most enjoyable time of my career ( we never worked together again but were always connected), but it ended soon as Surya quit as he wanted to explore selling into emerging IT Services market internationally. I wondered about the equanimity he had to be able let go his privileges to be along side a junior colleague!
Surya moved to the US and had a very successful time selling IT services, during this time he was in constant contact with me and actively encouraged me to consider a shift into international market, it was his guidance that led me to take this plunge into International Markets 20 years ago. I wondered then as to why he took special interest in my career!
Surya got back to India in mid-2000’s and shifted gears and transformed his skills and cold called CEO of flourishing Micro Finance company and secured a job of CIO. Over a period of two years he completely transformed Digital Journey of this Micro Finance company, he had ESOP’s worth over a few millions on table if he chose to stay on for couple more years, but then he decided to call it quits, as he was not happy with the corporate sleaze he noticed. I wondered briefly as to why someone would let go Millions, but then I knew it’s just the way Surya is!
He then reinvented himself as an Entrepreneur yet again, this time setting up an independent consulting firm and sold his services to World Bank , BRAC and many others. He was a happy man but hated status quo, this meant that he constantly transformed his career every few years doing something that he had no previous experience but came up successful every time. I wondered briefly as to why someone would put them through a change so very often, but then I knew it’s just the way Surya is!
When Surya & I spoke, call was never a short one, we would chat about everything under the Sun - career, films, family, politics, stock market, cooking, philosophy & what not! My last conversation with him was on 6th of March 2023 it was afternoon for me in the US, very early hours of the day for him in India, as usual it was a long call despite his weakness we spoke for a long time, he assured me that his health is improving and that he would be alright in short order. I wondered briefly as to why he wanted to keep me in good spirits whilst he was fighting battle of his life, but then I knew its just the way Surya is!
Anna, I am wondering as to why it took me an year to pen memory of you? What can I do when a piece of me that has gone along with you! I really do miss you!
