Morris's obituary

Sun Yow (Morris) Hwang passed away on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at the age of 72 due to a traumatic brain injury he sustained in a fall.

He was born the second youngest of five children, in Shantou, a coastal city in the Guangdong province of China. At the age of 26 he left China and stayed in Hong Kong for 2 years before coming to Canada in 1976.

It was in Vancouver, through the Seventh Day Adventist Church, that he met his former wife, Helena Chok. Within a few years of getting married they moved to Sechelt where they started their business, Sunny Market & Gift Shop, and welcomed to the world their children, Grace and Aaron.

Morris ran the store for 33 years until retirement, at the age of 71. Known by everyone as hard working, friendly, and always smiling he made many friends throughout the years. Knowledgeable and well-read, customers were amply rewarded with his wide-ranging banter. To exercise his talents and faith, he joined the church choir and Vancouver Oriental Philharmonic Chorus. He performed in local concerts and toured Taiwan in 2017 with the VOPC.

In 2018, he reconnected with Si Ming (Samantha) Zeng after their class’ 50th anniversary reunion in Shantou. Despite the distance and time zones between them, their love grew and flourished. They spoke on the phone daily and travelled across continents to be together. In 2020, they began plans to marry.

Morris grew up swimming in the waters surrounding Shantou, later on sharing that joy with his children, nieces, and nephews at local pools and lakes. The tranquility of the waters never left him as he avidly walked along the Trail Bay waterfront in Sechelt where you could sometimes spot him sunbathing on a sunny day.

He will be laid to rest at the Capilano View Cemetery in West Vancouver, BC along with his mother, Shu Hing Hwang, and his younger sister, Helen Luk.
