I met Sumit when I was a young man in 1988. He was a department head in Bell Labs Holmdel NJ. We were in separate labs but the same division. I later joined Sumit’s organization in Whippany NJ in 1990 and there I began to interact with Sumit. I came to appreciate his focus and drive, and in many ways I came to appreciate that I was similar to him, however he was unapologetic and driven, and held those that worked for him very accountable.
I was at that time a very angry young black man that was frustrated by the racism and lack of opportunities and recognition. Sumit taught me to handle that anger and channel it to positive results. Sumit promoted me to supervisor and subsequently mentored me to become a department head and finally a VP in Bell Labs. I am what I am today because of the great man and I will miss him greatly. He lived a life of dignity and pride and so was his passing. I spoke with a few weeks ago and he knew I was struggling with is pending passing but with grace and dignity he helped me through it. I am ok that he is in a better place. The struggle is over my dear mentor and friend. Please rest in perfect peace until we meet again.
Sumitda was a larger than life figure - intimidating at first glance, but soon one discovered that he was soft and sensitive and ready to give love, specially to those who shared his passion for art and music. I was one of the fortunate recipients of his affection and always considered him to be my mentor and older brother. There is so much I learnt from him specially his undiluted dedication to Rabindrasangeet which was enhanced by his superior knowledge of Tagore’s writings and philosophy. Every song he sang was sung to perfection and he never deviated from our guru Bananidi’s style and format. Although we did not meet for many years , we were in constant touch and our last conversation was three years ago about a script that I wrote for a Tagore musical presentation at the Gandhi Center. Sumitda reviewed the script and gave valuable suggestions just like old times. His passing has left a void in my life that will never be filled . My prayers for Bithidi, Oorbee and JJ. Want you to know that I feel your pain for he has also taken a part of me with him.

I knew Sumit from my BE college days. We first met in 1957 when we both were staying in Sengupta Hall in BE College and since then we have been in touch. I used to go to his house in Jodhpur park every evening and play chess, solving crossword puzzles and sharing stories of all kinds. We met again in USA and finally we lived the last period o=f our lives living within 60 miles of each other. I used to visit him and Sumit and Bithi came to see us and did this many times during the last twelve years. Finally we shared our cooking skills and enjoyed sharing are skills preparing many tasty recipes. He was like my brother and we used address each other as "Dada". Wherever you are stay well dada.

sumit was a true lifelong friend since in joined bell labs. him and another engineer were my mentors. sumit's "atlas system" was a true automated testing system breakthrough. at that time patents for software were not possible. we lost touch for a few years when i moved to digital equipment but after i retired i spend 20 years advancing his work as a hobby and getting his opinions. we communicated by email and in person while i lived in new hampshire for 20 years. i loved sumit and we were totally sync with life views and politics. he was a lovely man and a dear friend. i will never meet a nice finer man in my life and miss him already.
He was a very dear friend and mentor. We adored him. He was a veritable storehouse of knowledge in all areas of human existence that are important to us. We learned so many things in the realm of science, literature, music and the modern world. We have been enriched immensely from discussions with him on several occasions. We came to know him closely during our travel him and Beethi and his visits to us and our visits to their home in upstate NY and in NJ. We are going to miss him immensely. May his soul rest in the kingdom of eternal love and peace. Anita & Jayanta.
Bithi Mashi, JJ, and Oorbee - I am so profoundly sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in all the cherished memories you shared and with the knowledge that his family was what he treasured the most in this world.

Sumit Kaku - I was heartbroken when I learned of your diagnosis, and absolutely crushed when I learned you are no longer with us. I had planned to reach out to you to tell you how much of an impact you had on my life, but I didn’t realize that our remaining time with you would be so limited. I was a teenager when I met you in our gaaner class. You took me under your wing and never treated me like a child. Your trust and confidence in me to lead our Antara, NJ rehearsals and programs for not just chotoder class, but boroder class, too, meant the world to me. What I appreciated about you the most is that you were truly a renaissance man, equally talented in music & literature as you were in science & technology, and you passed those qualities down to my dear friends, Oorbee & JJ, as well. Thank you for treating our family as your own. My dad truly looked up to you and is grateful that you considered him to be his choto bhai, and my mom loved being your choto bon. I’m so sad that there is one less person in the world to call me “Ma,” but I am thankful that we had one last chance to spend time together two summers ago when we visited you and Bithi Mashi at your beautiful lake house. After that visit, you had texted me, “It was heavenly to see you all. See if we can do it again before we are gone.” I honestly didn’t think it would be the last time I saw you, but I know that দাঁড়িয়ে আছ তুমি আমার গানের ও পারে. ❤
