Sturges's obituary
Sturges Joseph Karban, 45, of Boston, Los Angeles, and Naples, sadly passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. He is survived by his mother, Jonnie Sturges; father, Dr. Edward Karban, and his spouse, Paige Karban; younger sister, Stephanie Smith, and her spouse, Benjamin Smith, as well as his two nephews, Theodore and Jonathan Smith.
Sturges began his amazing life in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Primary school foreshadowed the man he would become – as he often donned a necktie and carried his neatly organized homework to school in one of his father’s hand-me-down briefcases. He traveled the world with his family starting at a young age, earned the title of class president multiple times, and achieved a black belt in karate.
His high school career was highlighted by finding his passion and talent for debate, winning many championships, most prominently the World Championship hosted in Cyprus in 1995. Upon graduation in 1996, he received Deerfield Academy’s highest honor, the Deerfield Cup. He attended Harvard University, was a member of the Phoenix Club, and completed his thesis on Manifest Destiny. He spent his early professional life as an investment banker, later branching into boutique banking. A man of unprecedented work ethic, his professional accomplishments ranged from serving as CEO of several companies to producing a Hollywood film. Guided by an unwavering honor code rarely found in the business world, he built many professional relationships across the globe that often evolved into long standing friendships.
Personally, he had a gentleman’s sense of style and approached those around him with a courtesy that is often deficient in today’s world. He was a pop culture connoisseur, quick witted, and always found the right movie quote for the moment. In his personal and professional communications, he was a true wordsmith with an astounding command of the English language. He was a loving son to his parents and his younger sister’s “man of Honor” at her wedding. He was a man of faith, routinely starting his day with prayer, and served as godfather to his eldest nephew, who often referred to him as “Mr. Uncle Sturge.”
His immediate family laid him to rest in a small ceremony on Thursday, April 11, 2024. Details of a memorial service for all those who wish to say goodbye are soon to follow.
