Rex's obituary
Stewart Reginald (Rex) Whitehurst Jr, 93, of Charlottesville, passed away on November 28, 2023. Rex was born on April 28, 1930 to the late Stewart and Elizabeth Whitehurst in Norfolk, VA. He graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk, VA. Rex attended the Norfolk Division of William and Mary for a few years before serving in the United States Navy. He was stationed in Norfolk, VA, Jacksonville, Fl and Corpus Christi, TX before continuing his education at the University of Virginia. Rex was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He enjoyed serving as the kitchen manager, improving the quality of the food, turning the financial losses into profit, and almost as important, getting free meals! Rex graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts in 1955 and from the School of Architecture in 1959.
Rex made a career as an Architect in Charlottesville, VA. He worked for the firm of Milton Grigg early in his career and began his own practice after only a few years. Rex loved sailing, being at Lake Anna, and building model airplanes to fly at Milton Field. His grandchildren remember his witty sayings such as “I’m glad you got to see me again” and playing “Guess which hand” - picking the hand with the candy was rewarded with candy... picking the wrong hand was rewarded with laughter and then candy!
Rex is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Whitehurst Maddin of Nashville, TN his sons, Stewart Reginald Whitehurst, III (Wife, Melinda and 3 grandchildren - Makayla,Whitt, and Kinleigh), of Charlottesville, VA, and William Langhorne Whitehurst of Schuyler, VA. Peggy DeMallie was a dear and special friend that became part of the family and who also survives Rex’s passing.
In the wake of our sadness we are blessed by the privilege of having shared a path with such a great man. We are thankful for the time we had with him.
A celebration of life will be scheduled in the Spring.
