Steve's obituary

Steven Michael Swing, 61, of Dyer, Indiana, ascended to heaven on May 19, 2024 in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 8, 1962 to Billy Ray and Mary Ethel Swing. Steve shared 25 years of enduring love with his wife Vicki McDermott, whom he affectionately called his “pumpkin”.

A man of diverse talents, Steve's journey began on the Union Pacific Railroad, where he discovered his passion for blacksmithing. His technical prowess led him to enroll at Coyne American Institute where he went on to become a successful Local 597 pipe fitter for 25 years. Steve’s technical artistry was unparalleled. A true craftsman, he approached every task with precision and creativity, leaving a legacy of excellence in his wake. Beyond his remarkable skills, Steve was known for his generous spirit, always eager to teach and share his wealth of knowledge.

In 1992, pursing his passion for law enforcement, he graduated from the Park Forest Police Academy. He then went on to co-found the FIGHTECH Martial Arts Academy, where he studied and imparted invaluable lessons in personal safety. An avid shooter, his dedication to firearm safety, led him to become a certified firearms safety specialist. In his final years, Steve combined his faith with his security expertise, overseeing the creation of the Security Department for Faith Church campuses.

Steve lived life passionately. A huge music fan, he wouldn’t turn a screw or shoot a game of pool without his “tunes” rockin’ in the background; he shared this love with his children, Ryan and Jamie. He always supported his children’s passions, encouraging and being there for them.

As a husband Steve loved hard. He was a protector and a caregiver, a teddy bear and a romantic.

Steve’s legacy will endure in the hearts of all that knew him. His infectious smile and unforgettable one-liners bring joy to all, as we forever remember him.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Vicki; his son Ryan (Lauren) Swing, Daughter Jamie (Jack) Standley, Granddaughters: Riley Ryan & Maisie Mae; Mother, Mary Ethel; Siblings: Beth Swing, Kathy (Jeff) White, Jane (Darrin) Hillis, and Bill (Cheryl) Swing. Steve was preceded in death by his father, Billy Ray and Vicki & Steve’s beloved dogs, Summer and Smalz.

Family, friends and loved ones whose lives were touched by Steve are invited to celebrate his life and grieve his loss on Saturday, June 22nd, 2024 from 9am-12pm, service to follow at Faith Church 100 W. 81st Ave, Dyer, Indiana.
