Steve's obituary
Steven Michael Ostaseski (Steve), 77, resident of Clay, Alabama, passed away unexpectedly on June 29, 2025 at his home. Steve was born March 27, 1948 in Oyster Bay, New York. Son of Frank and Dorothy (Killoran) Ostaseski (Deceased), eldest brother to Alan, Frank, and Mark. A veteran of the Navy (1966-1970, National Defense Service Medal for Vietnam service, AHD Vietnam Campaign Medal).
Steve attended the State University of New York-Stony Brook where he was awarded a Master of Science in Urban Planning. However, his love of horses brought him to both manage and run boarding and breeding farms in Midway and Georgetown, Kentucky, in the heart of the Bluegrass State, for almost 20 years. After leaving Kentucky for Alabama, Steve spent most of his working years in civil service as a Transportation Planner, working for the Alabama Department of Transportation, as Primary Planner at Gresham Smith and Partners, Principal Planner at the Birmingham Regional Planning Commission as well as serving on the Walker Area Community Foundation and with the Cordova Recovery Project. Steve enjoyed serving the public and made many friends throughout the state. After retirement, he stayed involved in city matters and community service. A lifelong lover of the water, Steve was a surfer in his youth but more recently enjoyed canoeing, paddling and fishing, especially fly fishing. He had also recently taken up sport shooting. His most rewarding activity however, was spending time at any ballpark, field or court watching his cherished grandchildren play their sports. An advocate always, he spent time volunteering for the Mayfly Project as well as promoting the Alabama Scenic River Trail’s annual paddle race, the AL 650. He also was involved in church and neighborhood service and was HOA President for several years.
Steve is survived by his wife Florence, his brother Frank, his daughter Christine Moore, her husband Ernie and his grandchildren Eli, Sawyer, and Olivia Moore, and his favorite granddog, Rocket.
After a private family ceremony, Steve will be interred at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama
A celebration of life memorial service will be held at Bill Noble Park Event Center on August 10, 2025, from 2 to 4 PM. All friends and family wishing to pay their respects and remembrances for Steve are welcome to attend.
