Steven's obituary
MSG Steve Mattoon, 82, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, in Casper, WY, on January 20, 2025. Steve was a decorated veteran who served in the Vietnam War and spent his life working with the military and law enforcement in various capacities.
Steve was born on October 30, 1942, in Massachusetts. When he was around 18 years old, Steve decided to join the Army and was stationed at JBLM in Washington. He would go on to serve in the Vietnam War, where he met some of his closest friends. After serving, Steve spent time abroad in Saudi Arabia, working with the Saudi National Guard. Since around 1982, he worked with many police and military agencies, instructing and training special operations and tactical teams.
During his time in Washington, Steve met Marilyn, who quickly fell for him. They were married in 1994. Steve continued his work until around 2011, when he and Marilyn chose to settle in the town of Casper, Wyoming.
After retirement, Steve had a passion for spending time with his grandsons and watching his wife manage a lively farm. You could always find him watering the garden. Eventually, Steve adopted a pet chicken named Bud, who was born with deformed feet and couldn’t walk. Instead of roaming around, Bud would sit on Steve’s feet all day, and over the next 5 years, they became the best of friends. Sadly, when Bud passed away, Steve was heartbroken. His only wish was for some of his ashes to be spread where Bud was laid to rest.
At this time, there will be no funeral service. We request that you please leave stories and memories that you cherish on this memorial site.
