Steven's obituary
He was born February 12,1946 in Portland, Oregon to parents Blanche and Harlan Kness. He spent his childhood in Seattle and Vancouver, Washington. He graduated from Hudson Bay High School in 1964. After high school he attended Clark Community College and the University of Washington. In 1969, he was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts.
He spent most of his life working in the trucking industry but spent a short time dressing windows at Nordstrom’s in Portland, Oregon, a job he really enjoyed. He moved to New Jersey in 1997 to fulfil a dream of living on the East Coast working for Yellow Freight.
Spending time near water was something he enjoyed throughout his life. Buying a house along the Columbia River allowed him to spend time with his family near water. In the summer the family spent a lot of time experiencing many water activities in Washington and Oregon to include swimming, water skiing, wind sailing, etc. Steven also enjoyed snow skiing and tried to ski as many ski areas in Washington and Oregon as he could. When his daughters were younger, he volunteered with the Evergreen Youth Soccer Association spending time coaching and referring. He eventually earned the qualifications to become an assistant referee at the college level.
In New Jersey, he joined a local yacht club and would often volunteer to sail with other members as part of their crew. He hoped to someday sail along the East Coast visiting places like Martha’s Vineyard. His home is located along a marsh that is well known for the many migratory birds that stop there. Sea turtles often used his yard to lay their eggs. The Audubon Society were welcome visitors every few years to record the local wildlife in the area. He shared many pictures and videos with family and friends of his view and animals.
When family and friends came to visit in the New York area, Steven thoroughly enjoyed taking on the role of tour guide. Visiting New York was something he did as often as he could visiting museums and often ending the day taking in a show on and off Broadway.
Steven is survived by his daughters Karina C. Kness-Kuhl and her husband Daniel Kuhl of Colorado Springs along with their children Adrian and Mateo and Alena R. Kness of Portland, Oregon, and her daughter Yosha. His sister Marilyn Griffin of Portland, Oregon and brother Roger Kness of Vancouver, Washington as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Blanche and Harlan Kness.
