Steven's obituary

Steven Lee Grey was born on March 29, 1960, in San Francisco, California, to William Dean Grey Sr. and Annie L. Grey. He grew up in the heart of the city — a proud product of Paul Revere Elementary, Portola Junior High, and Woodrow Wilson High School. Even from a young age, Steven had that light in him — a spark that could fill any room he walked into.

He was street smart, sharp, and quick with a joke. If you knew him, you knew he always had that confidence — that smooth talk and contagious smile that made people feel good just being around him. He had a way of turning strangers into friends and friends into family.

But his first true love was always music.

Steven lived and breathed rhythm. He loved to dance — and he didn’t just dance, he owned the floor. He proudly called himself “The King of Poppin’,” and anybody who ever saw him move knows he earned that title.

In the booth, he was just as electric.

He was a talented booth technician and an original member of a family-based music group called Kool-E-High — a crew that set out to spread positive messages through disadvantaged neighborhoods. They used their voices, beats, and unity to shine light where the world often turned its back. Later, they rebranded the group as 2 Die 4, still family, still positive, still real. Steven — better known to the mic as Sir G Reality, also known as Dr. Ill — was always the hype man, the energy, the laughter, and the soul behind the sound.

But Steven wasn’t just about music.

He was a man of many talents — a true Mr. Handyman. If your car broke down, you called Stevie. If your hair needed to be right for the weekend, you called Stevie. He could fix your ride, fade you up, and make you laugh the whole time. That’s just who he was — someone who always gave, always helped, and always showed love in action.

He was also a man who loved to eat, laugh, and live life fully. His laughter was one of a kind — loud, warm, and completely contagious. When Steven laughed, you couldn’t help but laugh with him.

Most of all, he was family.

He was the proud father of four children — Jamal Hall, Le’Jahn Grey, Tolanda Grey, and Lucky Harris — and the heartbeat of the Grey family. Everything he did came from love: love for his people, love for his music, love for his community, and love for life itself.

Steven Lee Grey — Dr. Ill, Sir G Reality — left behind a legacy that can’t be replaced. His rhythm, his laughter, and his light will forever echo through everyone he touched. He lived real, he loved hard, and he left this world the same way he walked through it — with soul, with style, and with a smile that nobody will ever forget.
