Steven's obituary

Steve passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, June 18, 2021 surrounded by his loved ones. Born to Joseph and Laura Garcia on August 7, 1947 in Oakland. He attended Pacific High in San Leandro graduating in 1965. Steve proudly served his country for 4 years as a U.S. Navy Seabee, spending a year overseas in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1971. On his birthday that same year he married his childhood friend and love of his life Olivia Garcia. They settled in Sheffield Village in Oakland and raised their family, living there until his passing. Steven was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Laura Garcia, brother Gerald Garcia, sister Jane Bega, and brother-in-law Rudolph Waschau. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Olivia Garcia. Devoted father of Jody Day and Jamie La Grave. Father-in-law of Scott Day Jr. and Brett La Grave. Proud Grandfather of Levi La Grave and Jacob Day. He is survived by his brother-in-law Dan Bega, sister-in-law Dolores Waschau, nieces Laurie Fracolli, Rebecca Waschau, Helen LoBianco, and Linda Garcia, nephews Dan Bega, Rick Waschau, and Gerald Garcia as well as many great-nieces and nephews and too many friends to count.

Steve took immense pride in caring for his home and yard, designing and building a family room himself and creating a beautifully landscaped yard. Steve was extremely clever and resourceful, always searching for ways to improve on the customary way of doing things. He was willing to lend a hand to all and was well respected and loved by his family and friends. Steve had a way of making everyone around him feel special and valued. He found immeasurable joy in being “Grampy” and “Pops” to Levi and Jacob, taking a guiding and dynamic role in his granson’s lives. Steve was an avid Detroit Lions fan playing in the annual football pool. He also enjoyed tailgating at the Oakland A’s games. Steve was a proud member of Local 343 Plumbers and Steamfitters, retiring in 2010 after 45 years in the trade. Fulfilling his retirement dream later that year, he rode his Harley Davidson across country, honoring fallen veterans in the Run For The Wall. He enjoyed taking fishing, camping, hunting and motorcycle trips accompanied by family and friends. Steve was well loved by everyone and will be immensely missed.

A Celebration of Life will take place at the Lafayette Veterans Memorial Center on Tuesday August 31, 2021 at 1:00pm. 3780 Mt. Diablo Blvd, Lafayette 94549
