Stephen's obituary

Stephen Travis (Steve) Tuttle, 68, of West Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on December 27, 2024, after a long illness.

Steve was born on November 20, 1956, to Oliver K. Tuttle, Sr., and Rachel R. (née Stone) Tuttle in Newport, Rhode Island. With his father in the US Navy, Steve spent the first several years of his life with his family traveling from one naval station to another on the East Coast. Following his father’s retirement, the family moved to central Missouri, where Steve attended both California and Jamestown schools, eventually graduating from Jamestown High School. Initially led there by work, Steve fell in love with West Des Moines, Iowa, and made that his home many years ago.

Steve had a love of fishing and golf, but most importantly in Kansas City Chiefs football. While his illness had greatly prevented him from exercising his love of golf and fishing, the KC Chiefs remained a joy until the end.

Steve was a master at working with ceramic tile. He tiled projects across countless cities in the Eastern and Southern United States while he owned his own tiling company. Steve also found success in his career as a machinist for nearly 20 years. At All-State Industries, he earned the nickname “Grandpa” from his younger co-workers. Steve enjoyed his work family and cared for them deeply. He was proud to work with such a wonderful team, some who came to be very close friends.

Most importantly, after being separated from his daughter Jennifer when she was just a baby, they were reunited a few years ago. Steve’s personality is reflected in Jennifer through finding joy in family, humor in every day life, hard work, and a love for life. Proud is just one of many ways to describe how Steve felt about Jen. Steve loved Jen deeply and would take any chance he could to tell those that would listen about her and how similar they were. To Steve, Jen was a blessing the moment she was born, he just wished that they had more time together.

Surviving Steve are his beloved daughter, Jen Stacks (Huger, SC), and a granddaughter and grandson, Adilyn and Easton (Huger, SC). Also surviving are two brothers, Kenny Tuttle (Eldon, MO) and Mitch Tuttle (McRae, GA), and three sisters, Maxine Huggins (Blackwater, MO) and Amelia Tuttle (Columbia, MO).  Steve was preceded in death by both parents, and one brother, Robert F. (Bob) Tuttle.

Steve’s body has been donated to science in the hopes it may help in one day finding a cure for the rare condition he had. There are no memorial services currently scheduled.

In lieu of flowers, if you would like to make a donation in Steve’s memory, please send it to Meals From The Heartland, 357 Lincoln Street, West Des Moines, Iowa 50265 (mealsfromtheheartland.org) This organizations’s focus is feeding both children and families, and Steve often participated in events to raise money for their cause.
