Terry's obituary

Stephen "Terry" Dumas' battle with heart disease and brain trauma ended Sunday, August 19th, 2018 after he suffered a fatal heart attack. Terry was a loving son, father, and friend that loved music more than anyone we have ever known. He was born in 1950 in Macon, Georgia and moved to LaGrange around the age of 5. His business savvy parents owned a number of businesses throughout his life and always supported him and his love for music. Terry's father was a promoter of several musicians and helped promote a few of Terry's bands. Terry was in a number of bands through the years including Misery Loves Company, Grand Slam, and The Breakers. As a singer-songwriter, he enjoyed writing lyrics for The Breakers and performing with all of his bands. In 2012, Terry suffered a life-threatening heart attack while driving home from working at Ace Hardware. At the corner of Commerce and New Franklin Road in LaGrange, firefighters witnessed the accident and rushed to save him. Bringing him back to life, he was sent to West Georgia Medical where he received treatment for his heart attack and the brain injury from the lack of oxygen.
Miraculously, he made a full recovery and was able to return to work at Ace Hardware a few months later. If you knew him, you know he had a few vices. One of them being Vantage Cigarettes. After his heart attack in 2012, he never picked cigarettes back up. He took his second chance and quit smoking and picked music back up. Over the next four years, he wrote and produced two songs in his home and experimented with recording. Those two tracks are some of the best gifts he could have given us. Seeing him truly happy and expressing himself through music again was a wonderful thing to see.

In 2016, He was working at Ace Hardware when he collapsed and suffered full cardiac arrest. He flat-lined again, like he did in 2012 and was rushed to West Georgia Medical Center. Suffering another brain injury, the road to recovery was much longer. Staying in ICU and being transferred to Emory to have a Defibrillator and Pacemaker implanted was tough on him. The doctors were unsure if his confusion would dissipate but told us not to lose hope. After he was stable, he was released and went back home. After a month or so passed and the confusion worsened, he was re-admitted to WGMC and then transferred to a Rehab Facility in Fayetteville, GA. Unfortunately, the confusion did not cease and he was transferred to Social Circle, GA to a Personal Care Home down the street from his youngest daughter. There is where he spent the last two years of his life.

He was a good man that loved his family and music. He touched so many lives in his short 67 years and we are so thankful for all of the stories and memories that have been shared with us.
