Stephen "Steve"'s obituary

Stephen “Steve” Andrew Smith Jr. returned to his heavenly home on August 27, 2020 after a valiant battle with a long illness. His loving family and his firm belief in God supported him through his journey and gave him peace. He was born on July 23, 1969 in Jacksonville, TX. to parents Stephen and Aleda Smith, Sr. Steve graduated from Westwood High School in Palestine, TX in 1987. He attended TVCC and Texas Bible College. From there he went on to earn his correctional officer certificate. He worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for 28 years and retired November 2019. Steve met his wife Shannon in 1998. They were married February 17, 2001. They have two daughters Ryland and Kaitland Smith who reside in Longview.

Steve had a great love for life. He loved to have fun, laugh, and most of all, joke around and pull pranks. He had countless friends and never met a stranger. Everyone who met Steve, even if briefly, would say he was one of the nicest guys they had ever met. He enjoyed the outdoors, running, camping, floating the river, working out, and sports. Anyone that knew him well, knew his love for the Dallas Cowboys. He was full of vast knowledge related to his favorite team and was a true fan. Steve was gifted with great musical talent. He played the trumpet in the school band. He also learned piano and guitar. He had a beautiful, captivating voice and an ability to write songs and music. Most of all, Steve loved his family and, more importantly, his loving wife Shannon, who has been his dedicated advocate, and daughters Ryland and Kaitland, his greatest joy and accomplishment. He adored “the girls.” They were the light of his life.

He is survived by his wife Shannon Smith; daughters Ryland and Kaitland Smith; parents Steve and Aleda Smith Sr.; sister and brother-in-law Sharla and Rick Decker; nephews Joshua Decker and Ricky Decker; niece Brittany Ford; mother-in-law Ginger Henley; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jason and Sheila Henley, nephew and niece Justin and Brooke Henley; aunts; uncles, and numerous cousins and beloved dogs Dakota, Paisley, and Paxton.

Steve is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Andrew and Eloise Smith; maternal grandparents, William and Louise Bloodworth; uncle and aunt, Thomas and Glendale Pate, uncle William “Bill” Bloodworth, uncle Dexter Bloodworth, cousin Thomas “Tom Ell” Pate; and father-in-law Larry Henley.

The family would like to thank TIRR Memorial Herman in Houston, TX, CNS in Irving, TX, Pate Rehabilitation in Anna, TX, and Freedom Hospice, DFW area, and more importantly, the caregivers at Angel Care Home where Steve resided for the last year in Plano, TX. Special thanks to Lasonia, Beldina “Mamou”, Maria, Chi Chi and Jeliah for the love and exceptional care they provided Steve this past year.

Services are scheduled at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 5, 2020 at Covenant Church On The Hill in Rusk. Pastor Jan Pate will officiate. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., one hour prior to the service and friends are cordially invited to visit with the Smith family.
