Stephen's obituary
Mr. Stephen Shepard III, Esq., age 64, born in Port Arthur, Texas, and long-time resident of Queens, New York, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 13th, 2024, after a courageous battle with lung and liver cancer, attributed to his exposure during the 9/11 World Trade Center attack.
Born on June 7th, 1960, to the late Steve and Mary Shepard, Stephen was the third of seven children, known as "Butch" to his family. He shared a deep bond with his siblings, Evette, Cheree, Kenneth, Saundra, Christopher, and Jennifer, and his family roots remained an important part of his life.
Stephen’s intellectual curiosity and determination led him to graduate from Brooklyn Technical High School, after which he pursued his passion for law at New York Law School. Earning his degree in June 1987, he embarked on his legal career that spanned over 30 years with DC 37, where he became a pillar of the MELS legal community. His colleagues often referred to him as a “lawyer’s lawyer” — the one they turned to when facing tough, complex cases. As a supervising attorney in the administrative and wills unit, Stephen’s dedication to both his clients and mentees was unparalleled, reflecting his compassion and integrity in all aspects of his work. His service as a hearing officer at Queens Civil Court’s small claims division further exemplified his commitment to justice and community service.
Beyond his legal expertise, Stephen was a man of diverse passions. A chess master, a dedicated Mets fan, and a loyal follower of the Knicks, he found joy in both the intellectual and the spirited sides of life. He carried a contagious enthusiasm and a warmth that touched everyone he met, leaving an memorable mark on the lives of those around him.
Among his greatest joys were his three children, whom he raised in Corona, NY. Stefani, Jayden, and Jordan were the pride and light of Stephen's life, and anyone who knew him was familiar with his endless love and pride for them. He raised his children to be kind, responsible, and hardworking, reflecting the values he embodied.
Stephen is survived by his beloved daughter, Stefani Shepard, of Cliffside Park, NJ; his sons, Jayden Shepard of North Bergen, NJ, and Jordan Shepard of Honolulu, HI; and his cherished granddaughter, Sarai McDade. He also leaves behind a large and loving extended family, including cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends who were touched by his kindness, humor, and wisdom.
Stephen is reunited in peace with his parents, Steve and Mary Shepard, as well as others who passed before him. His legacy of love, mentorship, and unwavering integrity will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him. His presence in this world made it a better, brighter place, and he will be dearly missed.
