Stephen's obituary
Stephen Lucas, a lifelong educator and passionate bridge player, passed away on December 31, 2025, in Plainview, New York. He was 83 years old.
Born on September 12, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York, Steve remained deeply connected to his roots throughout his life. A proud graduate of City College (and his fraternity Phi Sigma Delta), he dedicated his professional career to the New York City public school system. He began as a teacher in Brooklyn and later transitioned to elementary school students in Queens. His commitment to education and children left a lasting impression on countless students over the years.
After retiring from the classroom, Steve found joy in teaching bridge—a game he both loved and excelled at. Alongside his wife Lesley, he not only played in tournaments but also shared his knowledge with others through lessons and community games. Bridge was more than a hobby for Steve; it was a way to connect with and continue teaching others.
Steve’s interests extended beyond the bridge table. He loved playing poker and took part in a stock club with friends for many years. Travel was another great love—he and Lesley explored many destinations together over the years. Africa held a special place in his heart, though he also had a fondness for Paris, likely because of Laduree's macarons. He loved music and subjected his family to 'the oldies' any chance he could get.
A devoted fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Steve never accepted their move from Brooklyn—a testament to his loyalty and deep affection for the borough where he was born.
Steve is survived by his beloved wife Lesley Decker, his daughter Allison Lucas and her husband James DeFilippis, his sister Andrea Lucas and her wife Monica Adams, and his granddaughters Alexa DeFilippis and Marley DeFilippis. He was predeceased by his son Matty Lucas.
Steve’s legacy lives on through the many lives he touched—as a teacher, mentor, and friend. We ask that those who can share a memory or two of Steve.
