It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Stephen Arthur Hines, who died surrounded by love on April 11, 2024 after a battle with encephalitis-induced strokes. Born on April 18, 1947, Stephen lived a full life as a father, husband, grandfather, lawyer, judge, coach and teacher.

Steve's charm and wit knew no bounds. His intellect made him a formidable lawyer, and then a wonderful elementary school teacher. He had an enduring love for reading and gardening, both of which brought him immense joy and satisfaction.

A distinguished graduate, Steve devoted much of his life to the pursuit of knowledge. After completing high school studies at Lamesa High School, Texas, where he was a varsity letterman in football and voted Most Witty by his peers, he proceeded to earn a Bachelor of Science from The University of New Mexico in 1970. He later acquired a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from Texas Tech University in 1973, further cementing his intellectual caliber.

One of Steve's most cherished successes was his contribution to teaching young children how to read. Part of a family of educators, he lent his skills and passion to teaching later in his career, and earlier on to coaching both football and soccer. Perhaps the only thing he relished more was being a proud father and grandfather, where he took great pride and joy in his children's and grandchildren's successes achievements.  

Steve leaves behind his loving wife Anna (Peralta) Hines, his four children and their families, Kurt Hines (Amanda), Andrew Hines (Shannon McCrann), Stefi (Hines) Porter and Justin Hines (Sara Brandt). He is also survived by his siblings, Kathe Hines and Danny Hines, and eight grandchildren (Braden, Bennett, Jack, Ashton, Luke, Caiden, Arden and Sloane).

Steve will be remembered as a larger than life character and a man of high intellect and charm. He leaves behind an enduring spirit and will be deeply missed.
