Stephen's obituary

Stephen Dowell, 79, of Gaithersburg, MD, a devoted father, grandfather, veteran, and lifelong servant of faith and community, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2025.

Born in Silver Spring, Maryland, in 1946, Stephen was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Juliet, and his cherished parents, Jim and Elanor. He is survived by his loving children: sons Paul and Gregory, daughters Jaclyn and Susan; daughter-in-law Kate and son-in-law Brett; and four adored grandchildren: granddaughters Victoria and Juliet, and grandsons Mason and Max. He is also survived by three brothers, three sisters, and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

A devout Catholic, Stephen was a faithful member of St. Martin of Tours Parish, where he served for decades as an usher and lector. He also volunteered regularly with the SHARE Food Pantry, quietly offering his time and compassion to neighbors in need.

Stephen attended St. Martin’s Parochial School, Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, and Catholic University. He proudly served his country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. After his military service, he continued the family legacy as a third-generation tile contractor—a skilled craftsman, honest businessman, and dedicated provider who took pride in his work and those he worked alongside.

Stephen will be remembered for his unwavering faith, deep love for his family, strong sense of duty, and the steady, comforting presence he brought to the lives of those around him.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Martin of Tours Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to [insert charity or church name], honoring Stephen’s lifelong commitment to service.
