Stephen Parker Byrd, also known as Steve, passed away peacefully with family at his side on December 16, 2023, at the age of 78 in Glen Burnie, Maryland. He was born on December 20, 1944, in Towson, Maryland, and his passing has left a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Stephen was a man of many roles and cherished relationships. He was a devoted son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend. His dedication to his country was evident through his commendable 36-year career as an electrical engineer for the National Security Agency. Stephen's commitment and loyalty to his work were unwavering, and his contributions will be remembered with gratitude.
Graduating from the University of Maryland Engineering Program in 1966, Stephen possessed an insatiable thirst for knowledge. He delighted in solving crossword puzzles, sharing fascinating facts, and watching sports. Stephen's inquisitive mind and love for learning were a testament to his intellectual curiosity and his desire to expand his understanding of the world.
In his leisure time, Stephen found great joy in watching his grandchildren participate in sports, cheering them on with unwavering pride. He also had a passion for sports himself, particularly the Green Bay Packers and the Baltimore Orioles. Stephen enjoyed friendly competition, whether it was playing pool, bowling, or participating in softball games. He also loved his get-togethers with the Iron Horse Crew. These moments allowed him to create lasting memories with his loved ones.
Stephen held his family close to his heart and cherished the bonds they shared. He is survived by his sister Nancy Hobaugh, his brother John Byrd, his sons Matthew and Daniel Byrd, his daughter Jennifer Byrd, his daughter-in-law Aimee Byrd, and his grandchildren Solanna, Zaidee, and Haydn Byrd. He was preceded in death by his father John Watson Byrd and his mother Ethel Mae Byrd. The love and support of his family were a source of strength throughout his life.
Stephen's educational journey began at Poly Technical Institute, where he laid the foundation for his future successes. He furthered his academic pursuits at the University of Maryland, acquiring knowledge and skills that would shape his professional endeavors.
In accordance with Stephen's wishes, his body has been donated to science, allowing him to continue making a meaningful impact even after his passing. While traditional services will not be held, his loved ones will gather to honor his memory, share stories, and find solace in their collective remembrance of a life well-lived.
