I don’t know what Dad and Tony are figuring out here, but this is such a familiar teaching expression from Dad.

Dr Boyce was a great teacher.  Aside from the math he taught me how to look at problems and see the possibilities.

His humor lives on as I still remember a few of his jokes.  My favorite is the 'S' car go !

I have cherished memories of working with Steve and of our friendship. He was an extraordinary person, teacher, scholar and friend. He will be sorely missed.
I'm among the many who have been so blessed to know and love Steve. Steve welcomed me in as new Organizer with KFTC many years ago. He patiently helped me understand Kentucky's tax structure and what we could do instead. And just as patiently, he helped me understand that this work deserved care, in every way. Steve showed me that taking care--slowing down and really understanding--is an act of love.I was looking at some of the work that we'd done together to spend some time with the gentleness of Steve's voice. I remember it well, and found it in manymany emails where he offered guidance that made our collective work more loving and full of care.  Listening, leaning in, eyes sparkling, throwing in a joke to keep me on my toes, and kindness through and through. I also  found a document I'd forgotten about called "Steve's Thoughts"--notes and snippets I wanted to keep at the ready. He poured so much into all of us here, into this place. I'm so grateful to have known him.

When we moved next door to Steve and Patty, we brought the chaos of kids and dogs with us. I remember standing at the fence talking to Steve and telling him to PLEASE tell me if the noise is ever irritating or bothersome. He said that the only thing that would ever bother him is that it made him a little homesick for when his kids and dogs were young, and that they love having life next door. Steve was the kindest guy with sparkling eyes and I’m so lucky to have know him.

Steve was a favorite professor during my Berea years. Loved his wit and his passion. Prayers for comfort to his family.

Patty & family: I'm so sorry for your loss. Steve was very special to me. I've met probably thousands of KFTC members in the last 20+ years and Steve is by far my very favorite. We'd sit together in countless Steering Committee meetings, picking on each other but also helping each other along the way. I learned so much from Steve in those years we worked together so closely. There's irony in the fact that Steve couldn't hear well, but he taught me as much as anyone about listening. Really listening. Thank you, Steve, for all the teasing, all the laughs, all the lessons, all the care and compassion you gave us all. I love you and I'll miss you.  -- Heather M.

2014, KFTC Annual Meeting
In 2014, Steve won KFTC's Hazel King Lifetime Achievement Award. I wanted to share what we said of Steve that evening. It all rings true today. We're still  working to live up to all the lessons Steve taught us. I'll keep trying to make him proud.

August 2014

The Hazel King Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to the KFTC member who has committed his or her life in the service of others by working for social justice.

It is our honor to present this award to Steve Boyce.

Steve is a member of the Madison County chapter and has served in various leadership roles over the years including on the Economic Justice Committee, the Finance Committee, and the New Energy & Transition Committee. And he’s spent about a decade in service on the Steering Committee and Executive Committee. He has served as Secretary/Treasurer, Vice Chair, Chair and is finishing his term as Immediate Past Chair.

KFTC is a much stronger, much wiser, much more successful organization because of Steve Boyce. He helped start the Madison County chapter. Because of Steve, there is now a solar farm in Berea that is a model for other municipalities and electric co-ops. Because of Steve our ideas for a progressive tax plan are tighter, our thinking about energy is more sophisticated and overall…we’re just better….because of Steve.

We could go on and on about the contributions big and small that Steve has made to KFTC. But in thinking about this award, we decided that we wanted to focus instead on what we’ve learned from Steve over the years. They’re important lessons.

From Steve, we’ve learned to really listen. Steve doesn’t listen in order to change someone’s mind or bolster his own argument. Steve listens because he cares and he wants to understand the other person’s perspective.

From Steve, we’ve learned to ask good questions even and especially if others aren’t asking those questions.

From Steve, we’ve learned to really appreciate people. Steve is really great about recognizing folks for good work or giving encouragement. I doubt he realizes how much his emails, notes, kind words and hugs have meant over the years.

From Steve, we’ve learned how to be good teammates. We’ve learned to lean on others when you need it and to help lift up others when they need it.

From Steve, we’ve learned to never give up. To look for common ground. To find places you can build from. And then you get things like a solar farm!

From Steve, we’ve learned to have fun. Some of you have been to countless Steering Committee meetings in which Steve and I would pick on each other and then hug it out when it’s all said and done. Those are some of my favorite KFTC memories.

Without a doubt, KFTC is stronger and better because of you, Steve. You’ve taught many of us so much and we’re so grateful.

I’ll end with this:

A few days ago, I emailed the Executive Committee to check in on a couple things that were in the works. Folks began emailing back, “sounds good”, “let’s do it”. Then Steve emailed back, “In what might be my last Exec Committee vote, I say yes.”

I know we all paused at our computers, a bit saddened to read that.

Then Carl Shoupe wrote what we were all thinking. Carl wrote:

“Steve, I cannot put into words the pleasure it has been serving with you on the Steering Committee. You have been such a great mentor to me concerning the nuts and bolts of our great organization and even in the tough times you always taught me to have a positive attitude. I so deeply appreciate the knowledge you shared with me and I will do my very best to take the knowledge and help move this tremendous group forward.”

Thanks, Steve, for all you’ve done for KFTC and the KFTC family. We’re honored to give you this award. And we promise to take all the lessons you’ve given us and make you proud.

I have nothing but phenomenal memories of Steve and Patty as supportive parents while having the privilege of coaching Nathan.  Integrity always.

I didn't know Steve well, but I was fortunate enough to cross paths with him at KFTC and to briefly serve on the steering committee with him. What I remember most particularly about Steve is that he embodied Leadership in the best possible way. He never wielded power, he built it up in the people around him by being an excellent example and by encouraging others to do the same. I feel very fortunate to have known him, and served my community alongside him. His passing is a loss for all Kentuckians, whether they know this or not.

Patty, condolences to you & the rest of your family. I have such fond memories of you & Steve when we lived in Berea. Steve was one of the kindest men I've ever met. I know you will cherish and find comfort in the memories of the many years you both shared.
