Stella's obituary
She graduated from Southern University with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. After graduation, her first teaching job was at Canal Elementary in Jeanerette, Louisiana. In 1970, Stella
met the love of her life, Wilford Griffin. The two bonded immediately and were married on May 29, 1971 in New Iberia, Louisiana. She moved to Shreveport shortly after. In
March of 1975 Stella welcomed her son Wilford Junior. In December 1976,
she gave birth to her second child, Danyell Griffin
It was in Shreveport, Stella made her mark teaching and developing lifelong relationships with students, parents and staff. She worked at Caddo Heights Elementary School for 25 years, then at Westwood Elementary for another 4 years before retiring. Stella was an active member in the Caddo Association of Educators (CAE), and the Louisiana Association of Educators
(LAE). She worked tirelessly for years to improve schools, gain support for
educators, and improve the learning environment for students.
As an adult Stella did not know her birth family, but had an interest in knowing her medical history. After months of searching she found her maternal family with the help of Reverend Hecock. Stella met her birth mother Mary Helaire Lawrence of Grand Coteau, Louisiana and her extended family
at 50 years old. Stella met her mother,7 siblings, as well as maternal family
members. She learned that her father, Walter Eaglin, had passed prior to
her search. She met a paternal aunt, and a host of other siblings and cousins
from his side, bonding with all of them over the last two decades.
Stella was preceded in death by: adopted parents; sister Theresa Smith,
and (3) brothers, Chris, John and Ralph. She leaves in mourning: her husband, Wilford Griffin Sr.; son Wilford Griffin Jr; daughter Danyell Griffin;
birth mother, Mary Elaire Lawrence; grandchild Jermaine Griffin; and her
extended family including siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Stella was an avid reader and member of Sistahs Book Club. She was a
devout Catholic, and member of St. John Berchman Cathedral until she
passed on July 31, 2020. A prayer service will be held at St John Berchmans
Cathedral in Shreveport on August 11, at 1:00 p.m.
