Startle Don Barnes
“Startle” Don Barnes, 82, of Ocala Florida, passed away on September 18, 2025, at HCA Ocala Medical Center. Born on March 7, 1943, in Iowa to “Toots” and “Jackie” Barnes. Don grew up in Oskaloosa and graduated from high school there in 1961. He went on to earn his BA and MA degrees from Northeast Missouri State University and a Specialist Degree from Iowa State University. Don devoted 30 years to teaching physical education at Crossroads Park Elementary School. During this time he inspired countless students and coached various high school sports. A proud Vietnam veteran, he served in Da Nang Province with the 1st Battalion, 44th Artillery Brigade, rising quickly to the rank of Staff Sergeant and receiving multiple commendations for his service. Don was struck by lightning during this time and it easily became his favorite story to tell! Don found joy in his family, his friends and Golf. He is survived by his wife Pamela “Nuckolls” Barnes, sons Chad (Katy) and Ben (Georgena), stepson Todd (Jennifer) and many beloved grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepson Chad Pembroke.
