Background

Starla was a child with a diagnosis of FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) This disorder occurs when a fetus is exposed to alcohol through the mothers drinking. Alcohol is able to pass directly through the placenta and into the cells of the developing baby, particularly the brain. Cells then die, are altered or do not grow leaving the children with a lifetime of organic brain damage . Because of this Starla had many cognitive challenges, difficulty regulating her emotional state and behaved half her biological age. This made schoolwork difficult, making friends and understanding directions very hard for her. She had many strengths such as loving to write stories, singing songs, and dancing.
Starla felt that the stigma associated with an FASD diagnosis needed to stop. She wanted Educators, Doctors, Therapists and anyone involved in the care of children to be educated about the best way to help children who have been affected by alcohol. The needs are unique and the approach must be tailored to these differences.
Currently FASD affects more children then Autism or Down Syndrome- though many are undiagnosed.
Please learn more here https://www.nofaswa.org/fas-facts-brochure , and donate to help all the children and families affected by alcohol exposure while in utero.
