Sonia's obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sonia Dismukes, 64, of Mobile, Alabama. She passed away on March 31st, 2025, after a battle with kidney failure and a number of other health challenges. Sonia was born in Mobile, Alabama on February 17th, 1961 to the late Alton Lloyd Simmons and Emily Pauline Simmons (McGinnis).
Sonia grew up in Spanish Fort, Alabama where she was a 1979 graduate of Fairhope High School. She continued her education at the University of South Alabama, earning a degree in Special Education in 1998. Sonia devoted her life to helping children and adults with special needs where she was a known Member of the Autism Society of Alabama. She also volunteered at the Spring Hill School of Special Children, as well as the Learning Tree. Sonia was a retired school teacher for the Mobile County Public School System, specializing in teaching children with terminal illnesses and disabilities for 23 years.
Sonia is survived by Bill Dismukes of Mobile, AL; her two sons, Andrew Dismukes of New Orleans, LA and Chad Graddick of Mobile, AL; her nephews, Lawson Simmons of Daphne, AL and Brandon Simmons of Daphne, AL; and many other family members and friends who will miss her dearly. She was proceeded in death by her parents and her beloved brother, Alton Brett Simmons who shortly passed just hours before her after a courageous battle with cancer and a number of other health challenges.
Sonia loved supporting her sons whether it was traveling the country for Andrew's baseball games or sending Chad off to Camp ASSCA every year. She was an avid reader who enjoyed spending time with her friends and family and helping those in need.
A private memorial for friends and family is planned to celebrate Sonia's life.
