Soledad's obituary

Soledad Cayon Lamelas was born in Matanzas, Cuba on March 30th, 1923. Daughter of Joaquin Cayon Argomedo and Teresa Hernandez Apolinario. Soledad passed away on October 17th, 2023 at Yudith ALF Tampa, FL. She made it to 100 years of age when she passed.

She worked as a seamstress in Cuba and the United States. For the Cayon family, all the daughters were taught to be exceptional at crochet and knitting. She only received an education up to the sixth grade in Cuba but remarkably could still teach her granddaughter the building blocks of algebra. She took English classes and lived humbly to support her son, Lisardo J. Lamelas, through private school education and his collegiate education resulting in his medical degree in internal medicine.

She lived her life devoted to family. She was the second oldest of many siblings: Joaquin(Nilda), Isolina(Arthur), Carmelina, Ana, Juana(Mario), and Felix(Neysa). She survived her husband Lizardo G. Lamelas and they were married for about forty years. Her family was everything to her. She was a gifted caretaker for not only her husband when he fell ill from cancer but also for her sister Carmelina as her health deteriorated at the end of her life. She stepped in as a surrogate mother to her first grandchild Teresa Lamelas and raised her. She dedicated her time whenever the family was in the hospital so they would never be alone in their time of need.

Soledad also had a strong dedication to God. She attended mass and the rosary prayer service every Sunday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Soledad practiced Lent all year. She refused to eat meat on Fridays for most of her life.

Soledad is survived by her only son Lisardo J. Lamelas, her three grandchildren Teresa Lamelas, David Lamelas, and Aleah Lamelas, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
