I met Simin in the Fall of 1967 when we were graduate students together at the University of Maryland. She intrigued me, & we corresponded over a number of years while she was in Iran. We had a confusing relationship, but I deeply admired & respected her. We lost contact for decades until my wife (Patti) & I heard her on the radio in Oakland, CA around 2005. It turned out that Sunshine was going to Mills College quite near us. We managed to connect again & I was genuinely pleased about that. We stayed in touch afterwards & her passing causes me great sadness. She was a very important person in my life. To her family I want to express our sincerest condolences. As you well know, she was an intensely caring & decent person. Her work for ALL of humanity, & her caring for all life, are to be noted & celebrated. Her passing is a loss not just for those of us who knew, loved, & admired her, but for everyone who was effected by her, & also for those who might have been effected but were not so fortunate.
