Shirley's obituary

Devoted wife, loving mother, supportive grandmother (Mammy), Shirley Nell (Gulick) Zuck, 86, was ushered into Heaven by the angels of our God to meet and praise her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the morning of Tuesday, January 4, while at home surrounded by her family.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life, 2 p.m. Saturday, January 22 at New Hope Christian Church, 908 E. Fourth St. Cherryvale, KS.

A memorial fund has been established through New Hope Christian Church. Gifts can be made out in her honor to New Hope Christian Church (earmarked: Shirley Zuck Memorial).

Shirley Nell was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on January 2, 1936 to Henry and Ruby (Norwood) Gulick. She leaves behind two brothers, James Gulick and John Gulick. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, sisters: Mary Borsdorf, Norma Spurlock, and Barbara Whiteside and brother, Steven Haninger.

While attending youth group at the young age of twelve, Shirley met her teenage sweetheart, Gerald Zuck, then thirteen years of age. They married five years later at the First Christian Church, Cherryvale, Kansas on Sunday, May 24, 1953 at high noon and went on to have four daughters: Paula Allen, Pamela Cameron, Patti Maxwell, and Penny Spore; ‘bonus’ sons: Robert Maxwell and Mark Spore; ten grandchildren: Justin (Matissa) Cameron, Kristina (Keith) Schaffer, Terri Messmore, Cassa (Brock) O’Cull, Logan Spore, Ethan (Ashton) Spore, Brianna Allen, D.J. Allen, Caleb Spore, Elisha Maxwell; thirteen great grandchildren: Tyreese, Troy, Kierah, Keithy, Ainsley, Aidan, Trey, Allyson, Gabriel, Koba, Blaize, Henry, and Swaidyn.

Shirley was known for sending sweet, encouraging texts and scriptures to her family at all times of the day or night, keeping her freezers stocked full of food for her grandkids, and staying up late to play games with her family. She enjoyed antiquing, going to craft fairs, sewing, and needlework. She was a small business owner of Kansas Krafts and a member of The Red Hat Society. You would often find Shirley cooking in the kitchen, reading one of her many books, doing handwork, shopping on QVC, or watching Price Is Right and Jeopardy alongside her husband.

Shirley was a selfless, God-loving woman who excelled in encouraging and taking care of others. Her greatest joy came from doing the Lord’s work and spending time with her family. She was a full time minister’s wife for 63 years, Sunday school teacher, youth leader, retreat speaker, and camp cook for over 20 years. You could find Shirley reading, studying her Bible, and praying for each family member by name everyday up until her last breath.
