In lieu of flowers

Please consider a contribution to Fund the Digitization of Joe Shung's Photo Archive.

Background

I'd like to express my gratitude for the overwhelming support our family has received during this challenging time. In lieu of flowers, we are asking those interested in making a donation to help fund the digitization of Joe Shung's Archive.

My mother inherited a large archive of photographs, slides, and 8mm footage from her father, Joe Shung, after he passed away. There are thousands of beautiful images and hours of 8mm footage. He documented most of his life and we have it preserved ready to be digitized.

For the last few years, I have had the privilege of working with my mom to go through some of the archive. She asked me to continue the legacy and preserve all the photographs, objects, and documents when she was gone.

With your help, I will be able to dedicate more of my time to working on the digitization process of this immense archive. Funds raised will aid in the highest quality digitization, archival storage, equipment, labor, and services we will need to accomplish this task. My education and professional background is in digital printing and photography. I will be using my skills, equipment and studio spaces to continue this digitization work.

The end goal is to be able to work with the high resolution digitizations and publish these images as a photo book, exhibition, biography, and/or documentary film. I truly believe there is not only sentimental value but also cultural value to these images depicting the life of a first generation immigrant chinese family in mid twentieth century America. Although these are the early stages, I believe there is something very special here. We would love your support to assist in bringing this project to life to preserve my family’s legacy and honor Shirley’s wishes.

A little bit about my grandfather.

Joe immigrated to the United States in 1929 from China when he was a young boy. He grew up in Buffalo, New York before finding his way down to New York City where he attended school to become an airplane mechanic. Following his studies, he returned to China to get married, making a stop in Los Angeles first.

Joe loved taking photos and documenting his life — where ever he traveled he kept a 35mm or medium format still camera and a 8mm movie camera with him. He had a fascination with Hollywood western films and his time in LA solidified his interests. He had fully adopted The American Way: Kodak, Cowboys, and Coca-Cola.

There is so much amazing motion and still imagery to go through and share. He was very technically skilled with a camera and also had an eye for composition and depicting daily life.

If this is of any interest to you please consider making a donation and sharing this fundraiser with your friends and family and we will be sure to update you along the way.

Thank you so much in advance. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Check out the 'Memories' section of this website where I will be adding more images and videos from the archive. More to come.

With Love,
Justin Suazo (Shirley's Son)
