Shirley's obituary

Ms. Shirley Diane O'Bert was born, April 4th, 1945, in Atlanta Georgia to her loving parents, Mr. Joseph and Mrs. Ruby Caroline O'Bert. Shirley loved life from an early age and enjoyed growing up with her beloved brothers Carl and Ron.  As a young child, Shirley lived in Aurora, Illinois and later moved to Atlanta to spend quality time with her "Granny".

Shirley developed a love for sports and competition at a young age. She loved "all things sports" and her fondest memories were growing up with her brothers and playing every type sport imaginable.  Softball was one of her first team sports as a young girl; as her family cheered her on, she played for the Mableton Tigerettes.

God, family and friends were Shirley's first love; while sports was a close second, and then came pride and love for her country and the U.S. Armed Forces.  Shirley was proud of her "Dad" Joe, who served during World War II in the United States Army.  Her love and respect continued, as she proudly watched her brother, Carl, enlist in the United States Navy as a young man.  Shirley was known to love hard and fiercely. Her bond and love for her family was ever present. This foundation and bond supported her throughout life.

Shirley was a long time employee of the original Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Ga., currently, Wellstar Kennestone.  She began a 20 plus year career with Kennestone Hospital within Child Care Services.  Later, she completed further education and became a Pharmacy Technician.  She enjoyed her roles immensely and established many life long friendships.  The memories made with her friends and colleagues were priceless.

Shirley's smile and laughter was unmatched. When you think of Shirley, you no doubt can see that ear to ear smile and hear her unbridled, larger than life,  laughter.  The greatest joy in Shirleys life was her title of "Sister" and  "Aunt Shirley". Her smile was never larger nor her heart fuller than when she found out  she was going to be an Aunt and later, a Great Aunt. No matter the time or day, you could make Shirley smile that smile and laugh that life by speaking the names of her most treasured persons: Amy, Melissa, Joy, and Joseph.  Shirley adored each one in a special way, and was a devoted Aunt even until the day God called her home. She was always proud and ready to share the latest achievements and stories of her beloved Nieces and Nephews.   Her Aunt duties and her love grew when  her "Greats" were born: her Great Nieces and Nephews Liam, Oliver, Mason and Chloe. Nothing put that extra sparkle in her eye than when she received  a call or visit from any of them.

Later in life, Shirley battled with mulitple health issues and required assistance, At which time she moved to Acworth, Ga where she resided with her brother Ron and sister in law Robin.  During the years of her declining health, she relied on her love of God and family to sustain her.  Ultimately due to a rapid decline in her health, multiple falls and hospitalizations, her doctor's recommended around the clock care.  This was a difficult transition for Shirley and all the family.   Though there were struggles with this transition, Shirley came to enjoy her new home and developed close friendships.  Shirley also looked forward to her family visits and her outings.  Some of her most enjoyable moments were when  Melissa or Joy would load her up and take her shopping.  Of course, her "Greats" accompanied  her during her shopping adventures. Shirley loved it when Chloe would ride in a bugggy with her or when Oliver, Liam or Mason would fuss over who was going to be the one to push her.

Shirley's life was full of happiness and love and she will be dearly missed.  She will live on through these cherished memories and in our hearts forever.  Our promise and hope lies in the knowledge that we will one day be reunited.
