Shirley's obituary

Shirley Ann Magee, 80, of Gladstone, Missouri passed away on March 2nd surrounded by the love of her family. Shirley was born November 12, 1942 in Blue Ash, Ohio to Homer and Mollie Vaughters. At the age of three, she moved to Miami, FL where she grew up with her brother Bill and graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in education.

After her college graduation, Shirley went on to teach but decided to pursue what would become a life-altering career change, relocating to Kansas City, to pursue training as a stewardess with TWA. It was at this time that Shirley met and married her first husband, Ron Schlotzhauer. Shirley then returned to teaching at Corinth Elementary School until the birth of her oldest daughter. They moved to Lenexa, KS where they raised three daughters, Shelly, Beth and Susan.

On July 14, 1989 Shirley married the Reverend Dr. Robert W. Magee. Together they moved to Gladstone, Missouri and shared a wonderful life. Through Robert, she graciously inherited a bonus family with whom she took great pride. Shirley loved her family, dogs, reading, playing cards, and actively supporting Robert’s ministry. This included taking on multiple roles at First Christian Church, interim church assignments, and supporting his life-long purpose of leading mission trips to Jamaica. One of her favorite roles was participating in the bell choir at both First Christian Church and Northminster Presbyterian Church. In addition, Shirley volunteered her time as the Chairperson of Accessories for the Assistance League ReSALE Shop in North Kansas City.

Shirley’s daughters, and their families, were a great source of pride for her. She leaves behind Shelly (Troy) McMaster of Topeka, KS; Beth (Wayne) McCoach of Lenexa, KS; and Susan (Eric) Rahe of Olathe, KS. Shelly, Beth, and Susan gave Shirley six wonderful grandchildren who she remained in contact with until the end. They include Trent (Kerrigan) McMaster, Courtney McMaster, Tyler McCoach, Quintin McCoach, Avery Rahe, and Hannah Rahe. She also leaves behind brother Bill (Jeanne) Vaughters of Franklin, North Carolina, five nieces and nephews, and beloved dog Bentley. In addition to her biological family, Shirley leaves behind Matt (Cherie) Magee, Robin Lane, and grandchildren Sam, Rachel, Madison, Reagan, TJ, Crystal and great-grandchildren Vera and Victor. Her parents, Homer and Mollie Vaughters, preceded her in death.

Services for Shirley will be on Saturday March 11th at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, MO. Visitation 9:30-11:00am, Funeral service at 11:00am, and private burial to follow at 2:00pm in Lenexa, KS (by invitation).

Shirley leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love, generosity, always being there for others, and fairness. We invite you to make a donation in Shirley’s honor to “The Rev Dr. Robert ’59 and Shirley Magee Endowed Scholarship” at Culver Stockton College, Northminster Presbyterian Church, or First Christian Church of North Kansas City.
