Sherwin's obituary
Sherwin “Scotty” Scott, 90, a man of deep faith and joy, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2025, in West Chester, Pennsylvania, surrounded by his loving family. He is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior, whom he loved and served from when he was a young man.
Scotty was born September 24, 1934 in Long Beach, California, to Francis and Alice Scott. His lifelong love for the water began in his boyhood. At the age of eleven, he purchased his first boat, a 7-foot skiff with a small outboard motor, with a $20 bill he found while on his paper route. This passion led him to a job at a boat rental company at sixteen and even to a daring teenage adventure, where he and a friend made history by crossing the channel to Catalina Island in an 11.5-foot boat.
He served his country in the U.S. Army, and it was during his station in Kyoto, Japan, that a friend, Cliff Ross, first invited him to gospel meetings. While he wasn't ready at that time, the seed was planted. Later, stationed in Petaluma, California, in 1956, Scotty’s heart was opened. He made the life-changing decision to dedicate his life to serving the Lord.
This commitment was the cornerstone of his existence. His heart's desire was to "hunger and thirst after righteousness" (Matthew 5:6), a passion that defined him. In 1957, he offered for the ministry and faithfully preached the gospel throughout California for 3.5 years. Even into his later years, he never ceased studying his Bible, and his greatest joy was sharing the truths he found with everyone around him.
In 1960, Scotty moved to Portland, Oregon, where he met the love of his life, Dorothy Garland. They were married on December 23, 1961, and enjoyed 63 beautiful years together. Their faith-filled journey took them across the country as they raised their family, living in Montana, Alaska, California, Texas, and finally Pennsylvania. Scotty adored Dorothy and was her biggest admirer, often proclaiming his love for her wonderful cooking and declaring he didn’t know what he would do without her.
A man of many talents, Scotty was a gifted artist who loved to sketch airplanes, boats and marine scenes. He was incredibly capable with his hands, working as a handyman and able to build or fix nearly anything. He had a great love for classical music, finding joy in the symphonies of Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach.
But to his family and all the children who knew him, he was "Papa Supermonk." Scotty had an infectious sense of humor and a legendary love for monkeys. He would get down on all fours to teach children how to make a perfect monkey face, affectionately calling them “monks,” then “teenapers,” and finally “apes.” This playful spirit endeared him to generations and was a beautiful reflection of his joyful heart.
Scotty was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Barry. He is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy; his children, Rhonda Grillo (Galen), Glenda Fleming (Gregg), Ginger Meyer (Shannon), and Eric Scott; thirteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and countless friends who were blessed by his testimony and his wonderful, monkey-like grin.
He will be profoundly missed, but we rejoice in knowing he has heard his Master say, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
