Sheila's obituary
For those who have had the pleasure of being friends with the woman, whose life we are gathered to celebrate here today, it would be a correct assumption that many will be left speechless as they reflect upon the times they shared with, Sheila Derbigny Vaughn. Whether it was her radiant smile which instantly turned a gloomy day bright or her open arms who joyously gave those “motherly” hugs which we all cherish dearly. Or that infectious laugh which always reminded us of the beauty of life. Or perhaps it was that unrelenting Faith in God, which constantly sought to give others a belief that they may overcome any obstacle, even amidst her own numerous personal hardships and tribulations. Simply stated, it was that commitment to serve as a vessel through which the lives of others (and this world) may be made better.
As flights of angels welcomed her home and bid her to take rest; the resplendent light of Sheila Derbigny Vaughn of Richmond, Texas diminished on October 7th, 2019 while on vacation in Vancouver, BC, Canada, after a steadfast struggle against colon cancer.
This child of God was born on June 27th, 1948 in New Roads, Louisiana to Joseph and Julia Powell. Sheila was the eldest of four sisters and brothers; Cynthia, Betty, Gerald, and Michael.
After graduating from Worthing High School in 1966, Sheila completed her undergraduate studies at Xavier University in New Orleans, LA and then earned her Master of Education from the University of Houston in Houston, TX. Following her educational pursuits, she worked for more than fifteen years as a Science Teacher and thirteen years as an Educational Consultant. After retiring from the educational arena, Sheila dedicated her time raising (and forever spoiling) her grandchildren, while at the same time always imparting love upon her husband, children, sisters & brothers, nieces & nephews, and everyone else in the family. Sheila was extremely passionate about trying to maintain contact with everyone and always make sure everyone knew they were loved.
Additionally, Sheila loved gardening, scrapbooking, decorating her home (for all seasons, but especially during the holiday season), and entertaining family & friends. With seemingly boundless energy at times, she was also very passionate about Volunteering with countless organizations, including, but not limited to CHI St. Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary and Heart Exchange groups. She was always driven by an opportunity to serve someone else. Of course, Sheila’s love of eating delicious (but not always healthy foods), traveling and exploring cities, reading mystery novels, watching baseball games, and occasional trips to make a few donations at some of the Louisiana casinos cannot be forgotten.
Sheila was blessed with two wonderful children, her daughter, Charlyn Harris, and her son, Rodney Derbigny, from her former spouse, Roland Derbigny, who predeceased her in 2004. On February 17th, 1995, Sheila married her life-long friend, Billy Vaughn and with this union two families became one, as Tamara Vaughn and Christina (Vaughn) Carroll became sisters to Charlyn & Rodney.
Sheila was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Cynthia Porter (Donald). She is survived by her spouse, Billy Vaughn, her sister, Betty Broadnax (Emmitt), her brothers Gerald Powell (Lugene – deceased) and Michael Powell (Amarillis). Also, her children - Charlyn, Rodney, Tamara, Christina (Damon); her grandchildren - Ashton, Delaney, Alec, Margaret, Kamryn, Dianne, Damon, Jr., Bridgit, Kendall, Madison, Ashton, Jr., and Kassidy. She also has numerous nieces and nephews - Teron (Karen), Kimberly (Michael), Shamika, Kristin (Ashton) Christopher, Cristina, Angelica, and Joseph who live on in memory of her. There are countless other cousins and relatives, extended family members, and friends who could not be listed here, but who all shared a special place within Sheila’s heart.
Words cannot effectively express how profoundly you are missed or assuage the anguish which the family feels because of the untimely departure of our exquisite matriarch. However, we carry on with understanding that you are now living in Heaven with all the Angels, Saints, and those who have passed before us. As you walk around in Heaven, please smile down upon us and fill our hearts with the precious memories we shared. You dwell forever in our hearts and in our thoughts. We love you always!!
Psalm 23:6
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me, All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord, Forever.”
